4.3 First article inspection.
4.3.1 First article sample. The First Article Sample shall be subjected to the first article
inspection to determine contract compliance. The first article sample shall be representative of
the manufacturing methods and processes to be used for quantity production. The first article
samples shall be submitted and tested prior to the beginning of production.
4.3.2 Submission The contractor shall submit a first article sample as designated by the
Contracting Officer for evaluation in accordance with the provisions of Table I. The first article
sample shall consist of the following items in sample quantities as indicated

4.3.3 Inspection to be performed.  First article assemblies and components may be
subjected by the Government to any or all of the examinations and tests specified in Table I and
to any or all requirements of the applicable drawings. All cartridges shall have passed the criteria
specified in 4.4.2.4 prior to being tested in Table I.
4.3.4 Rejection. The First Article quantity shall be rejected upon failure of any assembly or
component in the sample to comply with any visual or dimensional characteristic or upon failure
to comply with the first sample accept-reject criteria for any test. No second sample tests shall
be permitted on the First Article sample. The Government reserves the right to terminate its
inspection whenever a component or assembly fail to comply with any visual or dimensional
characteristic or components or assemblies fail to comply with the criteria for any test. MIL-A-
48078 shall apply.
