MIL-C-70741 (AR)
W/AMENDMENT 2
4.4.3 Testing.
4.4.3.1 Tensile strength of body material and weld (see 3.3.1), Major defect. During the first
half of a production shift and during the last half of a production shift, a body shall be randomly
selected for this test. From each body, three (3) specimens shall be selected at random for
determination of body material tensile strength. Also from each body, four (4) specimens,
approximately equally spaced along the axis, shall be taken at right angles to the weld and the tensile
strength of their welds shall be determined. Each of these values shall be compared with the lowest
determined value of the body material tensile strength for compliance with the requirement of 3.3.1. If
one or more specimens (longitudinal body weld or body material) fail to comply with 3.3.1 or 3.3.1.1,
that sample body shall be classed defective and the quantity of bodies which were welded during this
shift between this tensile strength test and the earlier tensile strength test (if applicable) shall be
rejected. The test shall be performed as specified in 4.5.1.
4.4.3.2 Weld strength of rim to body (see Dwg. 93781711), Major defect. During the first half
of a production shift and during the last half of a production shift, a body assembly shall be randomly
selected for this test. From each body assembly, two (2) specimens of welded rim to body segments
shall be taken at random. If any specimen fails to meet the requirement when tested in accordance with
4.5.2, the quantity of body assemblies which were welded during this shift, between this weld strength
test and the earlier weld strength test (if applicable), shall be rejected.
4.4.3.3 Spring embrittlement (see Dwg. 9344042), Major defect. Five (5) springs shall be
randomly selected from each heat treatment lot for this test. If any spring fails to meet the requirement,
the heat treatment lot shall be rejected. The test shall be performed as specified in 4.5.3.
4.4.3.4 Hardness of spring (see Dwg. 9344042), Major defect. Five (5) springs shall be
randomly selected from each heat treatment lot for this test. If any spring fails to meet the requirement,
the heat treatment lot shall be rejected. The test shall be performed as specified in 4.5.4.
4.4.3.5 Hardness of gasket (see Dwg. 9386829), Major defect. Five (5) gaskets shall be
randomly selected from each lot for this test. If any gasket fails to meet the requirement, the lot shall
be rejected. The test shall be performed as specified in 4.5.5.
4.4.3.6 Air Pressure.
4.4.3.6.1 Air Pressure of unpainted cover assembly (see 3.6.1), Major defect. The cover
assemblies shall be checked 100 percent. If any cover assembly fails to comply with the requirement,
the cover assembly shall be rejected. The test shall be performed as specified in 4.5.6.1.
4.4.3.6.2 Air pressure of unpainted body assembly (body weldment) (see 3.6.2), Major defect.
The body assemblies shall be checked 100 percent. If the body assembly fails to comply with the
requirement, the body assembly shall be rejected. The test shall be performed as specified in 4.5.6.1.
4.4.3.6.3 Air pressure of painted container assembly (see Dwg. 9378166 as applicable), Major
defect. Container assemblies shall be selected in accordance with MIL-STD-1235, continuous
