3.17.1.1 Baskets. The dimensions of the corrugated baskets of distilling units to be installed
in submarines shall be such that the baskets can be removed through a standard hatch, or in case
there is no hatch in the compartment in which the distilling unit is to be installed, such that the
basket can be moved through bulkhead opening into a compartment provided with a hatch
(see 6.2).

3.17.12 Welds. Radiographic examination of the welds joining the basket flanges to the
corrugated heating surface, the crimped ends of the fingers and the longitudinal welds of the
fingers is required (see 4.3.4).

3.17.2 Evaporator effect. The shell or door of each evaporator effect shall be provided with
sight glasses as necessary to observe operation and the extent of scaling of the basket.
3.17.3 Connections and fittings. The following connections and fittings shall be provided for
each evaporator:

Feed inlet connection
b.
Brine outlet connection
c.
Compound pressure and vacuum gauge, 4-1/2 inch diameter
Water gauge glass
d.
Relief valve and rupture discs
e.
Vapor discharge connection
f.
Foundation fittings and necessary attachments for anti-rolling braces, where fitted
g.
h.
Drain from vapor separator
Air vent from brine pump in last effect shell only
i.
Steam supply connections
j.
Drain connections
k.
1.
Air vent connections
m.
Sight glasses
Thermometers
n.
Lifting and handling eyebolts or lugs
o.
Gauge connections.

3.17.4  Vapor separators. Each evaporator effect shall be provided with mesh type vapor
separators, so constructed as to remove all entrained salt water from vapor generated before the
vapor passes into the vapor feed heater or the distiller condenser. The vapor separators shall be
removable without other component disassembly.
3.175 Desuperheater. A desuperheater shall be provided for the inlet steam to the first effect
baskets if required by the inlet steam conditions. Desuperheater shall be supplied with a strainer
and isolation valve.
