3.4 Tank. The tank shall have a capacity of 1500 gallons (5678 L), plus not less than
5 percent for contents expansion. The tank shall be of welded construction with the shell and
surge plates not lighter than 12-gage steel and the heads not lighter than 10-gage steel. A
manhole with a diameter of no less than 30 inches (762 mm) shall be provided. The manhole
shall be equipped with a basket-type, removable steel strainer. A hinged, quick-opening,
bitumen-tight manhole cover shall be provided. A well for a thermometer shall be provided in
one side of the tank, shall be inclined at a slight angle from the horizontal, and shall be located so
that the thermometer inserted in the well will register the average temperature reading of the
contents of the tank. A well cap shall be furnished, shall be screwed on the outside of the well
tube, and shall be provided with a retaining chain. A thermometer shall be secured to the well
cap. The thermometer shall be an armored pencil-type and shall have a range of 50 to 450F
(10 to 232C). A 3-inch (76.2 mm) minimum diameter overflow shall be provided and located
so all the overflow drainage will be to the ground. A 3-inch (76.2 mm) outlet valve that will
completely drain the tank shall be provided at such a location that the discharge will clear the
distributor. The tank shall be insulated with a minimum of 1.50-inch (38.1 mm) rock wool bat
type insulation and shall be covered with a water-tight metal jacket equal to the strength
of 20-gage steel.
3.4.1 Tank gage. The tank shall be equipped with a float-operated contents gage. The
gage dial shall be a minimum of 8-inch (203.2 mm) diameter with increment markings not over
50 gallons (189 L) per mark. The gage shall be visible and clearly readable from the
distributor's operator platform.
3.5 Steps. Steps shall be provided on both sides of the distributor for access to the operator's
platform, and when the catwalks and the operator's platform are on different elevations, steps
shall be provided between platform and catwalks. Steps shall not be less than 10 inches
(254 mm) wide and shall be flanged. A ladder or rungs shall be provided on the tank for access
from the catwalk to the manhole on top of the tank.
3.6 Operator's platform. An operator's platform shall be provided at the rear of the
distributor so all controls are within easy reach of the operator. The platform shall be
constructed of nonskid materials and shall be equipped with a guardrail for operator safety.
3.6.1 Guardrails. Guardrails shall be installed at a height of not less than 42 inches
(1066.8 mm) around the perimeter of the operator's platform. Intermediate rails shall be placed
at 21 inches (533.4 mm) above the platform. Guardrails need not be installed at perimeter
locations where distributor equipment restricts access by the operator. Guardrails shall have
openings at step locations to provide access to, and from the platform and catwalks, and to and
from the ground and platform.
3.7 Fenders. The fenders for the rear wheels on each side of the truck shall be constructed of
a minimum of 11-gage sheet steel. The fender clearance shall be determined on a level surface
when the distributor is truck-mounted and the tank is filled. The fender clearance shall be not
less than 11 inches (299.4 mm) above the chassis frame at centerline of the rear wheels, and not
less than 5 inches (127 mm) between the rear of the rear tire and the fender. The rear
