4.5.2 Tests.
4.5.2.1 Performance. Test the distributor's ability to perform the functions listed in 3.17
(except item f). Also, adjust the spraybar laterally and vertically (or turnup) using the controls
provided. Failure to perform any function, or malfunction of any control shall be cause for
rejection.
4.5.2.2 Distribution. Materials used for this test shall be any bituminous material normally
used in distribution operations heated to recommended spraying temperature. Operate the
distributor to apply the bitumen through the 12-foot (3.66 m) spraybar at rates of 0.1 (.38 L),
0.4 (1.51 L) and 0.8 gal/sq yd (3.03 L/.84 sq m) and through the 24-foot (7.32 m) spraybar at a
rate of not less than 1.0 gal/sq yd (3.78 L/sq m). The above application rates shall be applied
over a predetermined distance of not less than 100 feet (30.48 m) for each rate. The following
sequence shall be followed for each rate:
a. Weigh the loaded distributor
b. Apply the bitumen over the predetermined distance at the required rate of application.
Travel speed and pump setting shall be obtained from the application chart).
c. Reweigh the distributor.
d. Determine the amount of bitumen applied by difference in weight beforeand after test
and convert to gallons. (Use applicable specific gravity versus temperature curve).
.
e. Compute rate of application in gallons per square yard by utilizing the amount of
bitumen applied, travel distance, and spraybar width. Any rate not within10 percent
of the intended rate shall be cause for rejection.
4.5.2.3 Axle loads. Determine, by weighing, the loads on the front axle and rear tandem
with the distributor and all tanks and reservoirs fully loaded. Record the results.
