MIL-D-52987A(ME)
3.9.3 Stability. The distributor shall negotiate 35 percent side slopes empty, 20 percent side slopes
loaded, and descend 40 percent longitudinal slopes without any wheel losing contact with the ground. All
parts requiring lubrication shall be lubricated when the distributor is operated under these conditions.
3.9.4 Fording. The distributor shall start and operate during and after fording operations in fresh
water to a depth of 20 inches including wave action without damage and without leakage of water into any
reservoir including reservoirs containing lubricants.
3.9.5 Environmental conditions.
3.9.5.1 Tractor section. Without the use of any external means, the engine shall start within five
minutes and shall operate under full-load conditions within fifteen minutes after engine start in any ambient
temperature from -25 to +120 F. Cold start aids must be integral with the distributor and no aids may be
used which rely upon external support such as an electrical power source. Hand-held aerosol cans or
unmetered starting fluid devices are not permitted. The distributor shall be capable of operating in hot,
humid tropical environments; in dry, dusty environments and in moderate to cold climate to -25 F. If the
distributor is equipped with air brakes, an air dryer or alcohol evaporator system shall be furnished.
3.9.5.2 Tanker section. The water tanker section shall be capable of distributing water in
temperatures from plus 35 to 120 F.
3.10 Tractor section.
3.10.1 Engine horsepower. The diesel engine shall meet the requirements of MIL-STD-1410 for
application in class II end item. The engine shall be equipped with a muffler. The exhaust stack shall be
equipped with a rain cap or shall be fabricated and mounted to prevent the entry of rain or snow.
3.10.1.1 Engine horsepower. The applied net horsepower of the engine at the flywheel when measured
in accordance with SAE J1349 shall be not less than 150 horsepower using fuel conforming to
MIL-T-83133, grade JP-8.
3.10.2 Engine cooling system. A cooling system meeting the requirements of 3.9.5.1 shall be
provided. On or near the radiator cap, a burn or scalding hazard warning shall be permanently attached.
3.10.3 Fuel tank. The fuel tank shall have sufficient capacity for 10 hours of continuous normal
operation. The tank shall be equipped with a means for draining water and sediment from the bottom of the
tank.
3.10.4 Air system. An engine driven compressed air system shall be furnished to provide air for the
brake system (when equipped with air brake system) and for water distributor nozzle actuation. The
system shall include an air compressor, an alcohol evaporation or air dryer, and air reservoir with safety
valve, and the lines and fittings. A service outlet with hose and fittings necessary for tire inflate shall be
provided with the air system. An on-board electric or hydraulically powered air compressor is an
acceptable alternative (when unit is not equipped with air brake system) to provide for water distributor
nozzle actuation and tire inflation requirements.
