3.9.7.3 Brake lining.  The brake lining shall be of the metallic type
having nonfading characteristics when subjected to heat and to water immer-
sion. The lining shall be coded class FE in accordance with Regulation V-3
of the Vehicle Equipment Safety Commission.  The lining selected by the
supplier shall be of a stanard size as listed in the Automotive Data Book
of the Friction Materials Standards Institute, Inc.  The lining segments
shall be not less than 1/2 inch nominal thickness.  The brake lining shall
`be installed on the shoes by the use of hardened steel bolts and nuts as -
recommended by the lining manufacturer.  The brake drums shall have a wear-
ing surface of automotive gray cast iron and shall be of the anti-bell mouth
type.
3.9.7.4 Brake preservation.  All metal surfaces enclosed by the brake
drum, including the interior surface of the drum, metal surfaces of the shoes,
surfaces of backing plates and all attached parts, shall be coated with primer
.
conforming to MIL-P-46093 or TT-P-664.  Ramps, wedges, pins, eccentrics, cam
levers, anchors, and retracting springs shall be coated with preservative oil
conforming to MIL-L-21260, grade 2.  Items or surfaces which are wholly prime
coated, painted in accordance with Government specifications, or constructed
of materials providing corrosion protection equivalent to that provided by
MIL-C-16173, grade 1, do not require additional protection.
3.9.8 Chock blocks and cradles.  TWO wood chock blocks and two wire cradles
shall be furnished for each axle assembly.  The cradles shall be located near
the wheels, on the front of the fenders, when practicable. The chock blocks
shall be captive chained to the cradles on the outer side with chains of suf-
ficient length to permit placement of the chock blocks either in front of or
behind the vehicle's wheels.  The cheek blocks shall be as shown in figure 3

and the cradles shall be as shown in figure 4.
3.9.9 Vehicular electrical system.  Each semitrailer and cart-type traile
shall be equipped with a waterproof, 24-volt vehicular electrical system for
service and blackout "night travel.  Except as specified herein, the electrical
" system shall be in accordance with the following requirments:
(a) SAE Handbook, Electrical Equipment and Lighting Section.
(b Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.
ICC Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.
(
(d) TTMA Recommended Practice RP #9 and RP #14.
(e) ATA E-3.
(f) Figure 5.
All components and wiring shall be so located and guarded as to damage
and permanent deformation, and provide maximum protection from shock and
vibration. The components and wiring shall also be accessible for replacement
without disturbing permanently installed housings and guards. The electrical
system shall be in accordance with tablee III. Stem quantities that are not
specified shall be furnished as required (AR) for each unit.
