3.22.11 Bitumen spray bars.  The bitumen spray bars shall consist of
lengths of standard weight pipe in which not less than five removable nozzles
are mounted. The spray bars shall be mounted in the spray chamber with the
nozzles directing the bitumen toward the aggregate.  The nuzzles shall pro-
duce a fan-shaped spray pattern with not less than 50 percent overlapping
spray extending across the entire width of the pugmill spray chamber. The
spray bars shall discharge not less than 70 gpm of bitumen at a penetration
grade of 85 to 100, at a tempereture between 250* and 300 F. The spray bar
shall  be  jacketed  for  heating  with  hot  oil.
3.22.12  Pugmill. The pugmill shall consist of an enclosed steel chamber
(not less than 8 feet long with a total volume of not less than 60 cubic feet)
in which is mounted not less than two paddle shafts equipped with paddles for
mixing aggregate and bitumen or water into a homogeneous mixture. The size
of the pugmill shall be such as to produce  the capacity specified in 3.1.1
of a mix with not less than a 90 percent Ross count as defined in ASPT,
Volume 28. The mixing time shall not exceed 45 seconds. The paddles and
shafts shall permit adjustment for Controlling mixing action.  Paddle-arm

arrangement shall be such that any one paddle arm may be removed, reversed,
or replaced without disturbing any of the other paddle arms.  The shafts
shall be constructed of steel, and the paddle arms of high carbon or nickel
alloy steel.  The paddle tips shall be removable, reversible, adjustable,
and constructed of abrasive-resisting nickel-alloy steel or iron castings.
The paddle tips shall be arranged to mix and carry the material toward the
discharge end of the pugmill. An adjustable gate shall be provided at the
discharge end of the pugmill which, in conjunction with the paddle adjustments,

will control the mixing time of the material in the pugmill. The adjustable
gate shall be controlled by a handwheel or other equally suitable means, and
shall have a positive-position locking device.  The gate controller should be
s
located in a position accessible to an operator on the operator platform.
The bottom, sides, and charging end of the pugmill shall be provided with
replaceable, abrasion-resisting, nickel-alloy-steel plate or castings not
less than 3/4 inch in thickness.  The pugmill shall be jacketed for heating
with hot oil. The paddle shafts shall be supported at each end with steel.

The pugmill housing shall be constructed of steel and shalll have a hinged
steel cover.  The pugmill shall be provided with the necessary drives or gear
trains to receive power from the diesel engine driving the mixer. The drive
shall be provided with a clutch with control lever located on the operator's
platform.
3.22.13 Accessories.
3.22.13.1 Exhaust stack.  A removable exhaust stack not less than 36 square
inches in cross-section area and not less than 4 feet high shall be provided
