subjected to inspection with fluorescent penetrant (black light) in accord-
ance with MIL-1-6866, and shall exhibit no cracks or other defects, or shall
be considered to have failed the tests.
4.4.10.2
High Temperature - Procedure I:  The purge unit shall be tested
in accordance with procedure I of MIL-E-4970A.
4.4.10.3
Salt Fog: The salt fog test shall be conducted in accordance with
MIL-E-4970 for a period of 50 hours.  Operation of the unit is not required
during this exposure.
4.4.10.4
Rain Tests - Procedure I:  The unit shall be positioned on the
test chamber floor in its normal operating position. After exposure to rain
for one hour and while still in the rain test, the unit shall be started and
operated at full rated output for a period of 30 minutes.  Failure of the
unit to start or operate satisfactorily during the rain test shall be cause
for rejection.  Any collection of moisture within the housing in excess of
1/8 inch deep or which could be detrimental to the operation of the tester
after the rain test shall be cause for rejection.
Part Failures:  If during the preproduction testing of a vacuum

pump a part fails, that part shall be replaced with a redesigned part or one
of a different material unless the procuring activity authorizes installation
of a new part of the original design and material for one which failed due
to faulty material or workmanship.  The preproduction testing shall be con-
sidered completed when every major pact in the vacuum pump has passed the
complete test.  At the discretion of the procuring activity, redesigning and
retesting may be required of any part which fails or indicates weakness
after completing its preproduction test, but which is retained in the vacuum
pump to complete testing of other parts.
