MIL-R-82689
3.5 Protective finish. Protective finish shall be in accordance with the applicable specification and
drawings and shall apply to all surfaces of the component regardless of contour configuration and includes
internal surfaces. Special internal electrodes may be required to get the proper internal coating.
3.6 Radiographic inspection. Each release shall be radiographically examined for defects (see
4.5.3.7).
3.7 Metal parts assembly. When the firing pin release metal parts assembly is complete, except for the
dust seal, the operating rod shall remain extended in the locked position while complying with the following
conditions:
a.
The operating rod shall be free to rotate 360 degrees with respect to the assembly and there
shall be no evidence of binding or intermittent resistance to rotation, resulting from variation in
the locking components or the presence of foreign matter.
b.
The metal parts assembly shall be free to rotate 360 degrees with respect to the operating rod
under a load application of 20 pounds. Load application shall be in the direction tending to
cause retraction of the operating rod along the central axis of the assembly.
c.
After rotation under load, the operating rod shall be free to rotate 360 degrees with respect to
the assembly and there shall be no evidence of binding or intermittent resistance to rotation.
3.8 Functioning. When the operating rod of the assembled firing pin release is held firmly and a gas
source having a maximum pressure of 250 psi is applied to the housing gas intake port, the firing pin release
body and cylinder assembly shall move completely over the release operating rod. The operating rod shall
be returned to the original extended position. Complete and positive locking shall be assured.
3.9 Breakaway torque. The cylinder of each firing pin release assembly, prior to sealing of the four
cylinder holes, shall withstand a breakaway torque of 50 inch pounds with respect to the firing pin release
housing.
3.10 Residual magnetism. The firing pin release assembly shall not deflect the indicator of the
compass more than five degrees in either direction using procedures in 4.6.4.
3.11 Workmanship. Releases shall be free of cracks, splits, or other defects which might prevent
proper mating with connecting parts or proper functioning of the RAU-3/A Remover.
3.11.1 Metal defects. All components shall be free from cracks, splits, cold shuts, inclusions, porosity,
or any similar defect.
3.11.2 Burr. No part shall have a burr which might interfere with the assembly or function of the item
or which might be injurious to personnel handling the item.
3.11.3 Foreign matter. No part or assembly shall contain chips, dirt, grease, rust, corrosion, or other
foreign matter.
