3.9.1.1 Precautions (noise).  Hearing caution signs shall be posted on
s
equipment if the sound level exceeds 85dB(A) at the operator position.  Noise
level of 85dB(A) may only be exceeded when it is beyond the present state-of-
the-art. Caution signs, if required, shall state "CAUTION, HEARING PROTECTION
REQUIRED WITHIN (SPECIFY) FEET".  Specify the maximum distance in feet 85dB(A)
is measured from the equipment.  Plates shall be in accordance with MIL-P-514,
Type III, Composition C, of Type I, Grade A, Class 1 materiel.
3.9.2 Exterior noise.  The sprayer's noise level shall comply with
MIL-STD-1474 when tested in accordance with 4.5.2.8.2.
3.10 Reliability.  The specified Mean-Time-Between Failure (MTBF) shall be
120 hours when the sprayer is tested as specified in 4.5.2.9.
3.11 Maintenance ratio.  The sprayer shall have a maintenance ratio of not
more than 0.025.  Maintenance ratio is defined as the ratio of the total active
maintenance man-hours required (scheduled and unscheduled) to the total operating
time.  Man-hours for repair of replaced components and scheduled before-and-after
operation checks are excluded.  A maintenance schedule shall be furnished prior
to the start of any testing (see 4.5.2.10).
3.12 Engine.  For the purpose of selecting the engine, the sprayer shall be
classified as a class I end item in accordance with MIL-STD-1410.  The gasoline
engine including all systems components and accessories, shall conform to
MIL-STD-1410, Class 1, except as otherwise specified herein.  The engine shall
be not less than 5 horsepower and shall be capable of operating under all
conditions specified herein when using fuels and lubricants specified herein and
in MIL-STD-1410.

3.12.1 Electromagnetic interference characteristics. When specified (see
6.2), the electromagnetic interference emission characteristics of the sprayer
shall conform to MIL-STD-461, Class II (see 4.5.2.7).
3.12.2 Fuel tank.  A fuel tank, sufficient to operate the engine not less
than 60 minutes without refueling, and fuel lines shall be furnished.  The fuel
tank shall be located where spills or overflows cannot contact electrical
components or hot surfaces.
3.13 Lubrication.
3.13.1 Lubricants.  When applicable, the sprayer shall operate as specified
herein when serviced with the following military lubricants:
Engine:
MIL-L-2104 or MIL-L-46167.
MIL-G-10924 or MIL-G-23827.
Grease Lubrication:
3.13.2 Lubrication fittings.  Lubrication fittings shall conform to
NIL-F-3541, Type I, II, or III.  Fittings shall be located in a protected
position and shall be accessible to a hand-operated grease gun conforming to
