MIL-S-24603A(SH)
4.6 Tests.
4.6.1 Gas tightness.  With the comminutor motor running, the internal
comminutor casing shall be pressurized with air to approximately 2 feet of water
pressure head (gauge), and then the air supply shall be shut off.  With pres-
surized air supply removed, the pressure shall not drop below 50 percent
(approximately 1 foot of water) of the original pressure (gauge) reading within a
30-minute period.  Contained volume of air used in this pressure test shall not
exceed 50 standard cubic feet,
4.6.2 Liquid tightness.  With the comminutor running, the internal
comminutor casing shall be pressurized with water to a pressure of 50 feet of
head.  Comminutor shall be operated under these conditions for 3 hours. Repeat
test at a pressure head of 10 feet of water.  Any perceptible leakage during the
test shall be basis for rejection,
4.6.3 No-load motor test.  With the comminutor operating under no-load,
motor voltage and current draw readings shall be recorded.  Checking power draw
against the motor characteristics shall verify that no binding or excessive drag
is occurring in the comminutor or drive mechanism.
4.6.4 Fineness of gr ind.  With a filter bag or screen placed in the
discharge stream from the comminutor, sufficient flush fluid shall inject the
following items into the comminutor:
(a)
Toothbrush,
(b)
Shop rag.
(c)
Potato.
(d)
Sponge.
(e)
String mop strands.
Drinking glass.
(f)
Steel wool pad.
(g)
(h)
Razor blades.
Work gloves
(i)
Bottle caps,
(j)
(k)
Steak bone (at least 6-inches long).
Fineness of grind shall meet or exceed
Items shall pass through the comminutor.
the requirements of 3.3 and 3.3.1.
4.6.5  Noise test.  Noise tests shall be conducted with the comminutors and
its associated motors, controllers, and drive mechanisms arranged to duplicate
shipboard installation and operation in a normal condition.  Noise levels shall
be within the limits specified in 3.7.4.  When specified in the contract or
order, component shop noise test reports shall be prepared (see 6.2.2).
4.6.6  Shock test.  Shock tests shall be conducted in accordance with
MIL-S-901, with the comminutor not operating, to determine conformance to 3.3.6.
When specified in the contract or order, equipment shock test reports shall be
prepared (see 6.2.2).
