Association or European Tyre and Rim Technical Organisation recommendations, for the type
and size of tires furnished and for operation under the conditions specified in table II. Except
when tube type tires are specified in acquisition documents, multi-piece rims shall not be
furnished on single rear axles rated at 23,000 pounds or less and on rear tandem axles rated at
52,000 pounds or less. Tire, rim size, disc wheel size, and ply rating shall be the same for all
wheels on each vehicle. When specified (see 6.2), disc type wheels shall be furnished.
*  3.10.1 Tires. Tires shall be of the steel belted radial type. Tires shall have highway tread.
Tires shall be of the tubeless type or, on axles where multi-piece rims are permitted (see 3.10),
may be of the tube type. Tires shall be of rated capacity at least equal to the load imposed on
each tire, measured at each wheel, at the ground, with the semitrailer loaded with specified
payload. Tires and tire size designation systems shall conform to the Tire and Rim Association
or to the European Tyre and Rim Technical Organisation recommendations. The number of tires
furnished on each semitrailer shall be eight for style 4, twelve for style 6 and sixteen for style 8,
plus any spare tires required.
3.10.2 Inner tubes. When tube-type tires are permitted herein or specified in acquisition
documents, inner tubes shall be of the heavy duty type, and shall be of the proper size for the
tires furnished. Tire flaps shall be provided for tube-type tires in accordance with Tire and Rim
Association or to the European Tyre and Rim Technical Organisation recommendations.
3.10.3 Spare wheel or rim. When specified (see 6.2), a spare wheel or rim shall be
furnished. The spare wheel or rim shall be the same size as those furnished on the semitrailer.
The spare shall be securely stowed on the vehicle for shipment only.
3.10.4 Spare tire. When specified (see 6.2), an inflated spare tire, mounted on the spare
wheel or rim, shall be furnished. The spare tire shall be of the same size, tread design and load
range (ply rating) as the tires furnished on the vehicle. The spare assembly shall be securely
stowed on the vehicle for shipment only.
*  3.10.5 Spare tire storage compartment. When specified (see 6.2), an anti-theft spare tire
storage compartment shall be furnished. The storage compartment shall be constructed of not
less than 12 gage sheet steel and shall be bolted to frame structural members. A hinged lid or
door and provisions for a padlock shall be furnished. The compartment shall neither impair the
use of the loading surfaces nor reduce the vehicle ground clearance.
