4.5.1.1 Stress calculations. Stress calculations (see 3.1.3) for the load-carrying members of
the semitrailer shall be made. The theoretical load for the stress calculations shall weight
3,000 pounds per cubic yard for aggregate and 425 pounds per cubic yard for refuse, as
applicable, for a truck. The minimum payload shall be that specified in table I and the applicable
specification sheet. Stress in any load-carrying member in excess of 33 percent of the yield point
of the material shall constitute failure. Stress calculations for the upper fifth wheel plate
assembly shall be as specified in 3.9, table III.
4.5.2 Tests. Tests shall be in accordance with table V and as specified herein. The
contractor may use any truck-tractor for tests in 4.5.2.2 through 4.5.2.4 and 4.5.2.6, with the
provision that the contractor's selected truck-tractor model has a published GCWR by its
manufacturer equal to or in excess of the actual GCWR of the maximum test weight of the
combination and conforms to the safety, performance, and dimensional compatibility
requirements specified herein.
