sprockets  } shafting, keys and keyways, take-up adjusting rods, springs,
chock blocks, safety chains, coupling pins, towing hooks, arid- any other
surface exposed by sectionalization or disassembly, and any other similar
unpainted exterior metal surface not definitely specified herein requiring
the application of a contact preservative in accordance with MIL-P-116
shall be coated with type P-1 preservative.
5.2.1.4.2 Machined surfaces.  Exposed exterior machined surfaces
shall be coated with type P-6 preservative. The coated surfaces shall
be wrapped or covered with barrier material conforming to MIL-B-121,
type I, grade A, class 2 and secured in place with tape conforming to
PPP-T-60, class 1.
5.2.l.5 Semitrailer chassis and dolly components. The components
of the semitrailer chassis and dolly shall be preserved and packaged in
accordance with the level A (mobile) requirements of MIL-STD-281.
5.2.1.6 Gears.
5.2.1.6.1 Exposed gears.  Exposed gears shall be coated with type
P-1 preservative or with primer conforming to TT-P-664.
5.2.1.6.2 Enclosed gears. Gears operating on lubricating oil
(SAE 10, 30, or 50) shall have the housing filled to the operating
level with type P-10, grade 1, 2, or 3 preservative as applicable
and tagged to indicate:  "The preservative is good for operation. Do
not drain until the first required lubrication change."  Gears operating
on gear lubricant (SAE 80 or 90) shall be filled to the operating level
with lubricant conforming to MIL-L-2105, grade as applicable, and tagged
to indicate:  "The lubricant is good for operation."  Gears not oper-
ating on lubricating oil (SAE 10, 30, or 50) or lubricant (SAE 80 or 90)
shall be filled to the operating level with the approved lubricant required
for operation.  The gear housings shall be tagged to indicate:  "The
housing is filled to the operating level with the applicable-type lubri-
cant."  Tags shall conform to UU-T-81, type A. Tags and the printing
thereon shall be waterproofed in accordance with MIL-STD-129.
5.2.l.7 Drive chains.
5.2.1.7.1  Exposed chains.  Exposed drive chains shall be coated with
enough type P-3 or P-9 preservative to assure penetration of the preserv-
ative to the inner surfaces of the rollers, pins, and bushings.  The
excess preservative shall be drained, and the entire chain shall be
