MIL-S-62127A(AT)
3.2.2 Payload. The payload capacity shall be defined as the weight of 52,000 cubic feet
of helium gas at 2,400 psig. For the purpose of computing the payload distribution on the
suspension and kingpin it shall be considered as 1,000 pounds.
3.2.3 Gross weight. The gross weight of the semitrailer shall consist of the curb weight
and payload.
3.2.4 Ratings. Vehicle ratings shall be the manufacturer's published ratings. Component
and vehicular ratings shall not be raised to meet the requirements of this specification. When
published ratings are not available, verification of ratings must be submitted to the engineering
office of the procuring activity.
3.3 Design. The semitrailer shall be designed to provide a readily mobile high-pressure
gas storage pressure vessel assembly suitable for filling with helium gas at a generating site or
railroad siding, transporting the gas to a using location, storing the helium gas, and charging the
gas with the using apparatus at high flow rates. The semitrailer cylinder mountings and hold
down devices shall be designed to withstand an acceleration factor of 1-1/2 g (g = gross weight
of the semitrailer), for a minimum of 0.1 second in any and all directions. The complete system
shall be capable of withstanding ambient temperatures up to plus 160 degrees Fahrenheit (F)
and exposure to solar radiation.
3.4 Performance. Performance shall be demonstrated with the loaded semitrailer
equipped with all attachments, accessories, and the 38 pressure vessels; completely serviced and
adjusted; and when being towed by a towing vehicle. The semitrailer shall be capable of being
towed over improved roads at speeds up to 55 miles per hour (mph), and over dry improved
gravel roads at speeds up to 10 mph with no evidence of failure, malfunction, or deformation of
the semitrailer, components, attachments or accessories.
3.4.1 Tracking ability. The semitrailer shall follow the towing vehicle over dry, level,
smooth, prepared, hard-surfaced roads and over dry improved and gravel roads without
exceeding the tracking deviations specified in Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulation
393.70(a). When coupled to the towing vehicle, operating in its minimum turning circle, the
semitrailer shall follow without cramping or side slipping. The semitrailer shall be capable of
assuming an angle of not less than 90 degrees with the longitudinal axis of the towing vehicle
without cramping or damage to the semitrailer or the towing vehicle.
