3.3.3.1.1 Marking location.  Each bar shall be marked in lengthwise
rows of characters recurring at intervals of not greater than 2 feet, with
the rows not greater than 3 inches apart and alternately staggered.
3.3.3.1.1.1 Alternate location.  When the procuring activity so
authorizes, each bar may be marked near one end.
3.3.3.2 Forgings.  The method of marking forgings shall be in accord-
ance with the requirements of AMS 2808.
3.3.4 Workmanship.  Bars and forgings furnished under this specifica-
tion shall be uniform in quality and shall be free from tears, internal
ruptures, imbedded scale, segregations, or other imperfections considered
detrimental to the suitability of the product for the intended use.
4. QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS
* 4.1 Responsibility for inspection.  Unless otherwise specified in the
contract or purchase order, the contractor is responsible for the per-
formance of all inspection requirements as specified herein, Except as
otherwise specified in the contract or order, the contractor may use
his own or any other facilities suitable for the performance of the
inspection requirements specified herein, unless disapproved by the Gov-
ernment,  The Government reserves the right to perform any of the
inspections set forth in the specification where such inspections are
deemed necessary to assure supplies and services conform to prescribed
requirements.
4.2 Classification of inspections.  Inspection of the steel bars and
forgings shall be classified as preproduction inspection and acceptance
inspection.  The inspection samples shall be subjected to the tests
specified in table I, as applicable, using the test methods specified
herein,
4.3 Sampling.  After samples have been separated from the parent
material, no further forging or heat reduction shall be performed on the
material for test samples,  The test samples, if made separately from
the forging, shall be heattreated with the forgings they represent.
