3.1.3.2 Air transportability. The forklift shall be transportable
in the C-141 aircraft. Transportability requirements shall be in
accordance with MIL-A-8421, Air Force Design Handbook DH1-11, and as
specified herein. Counterweight(s), cab, ROPS, FOPS, muffler,
forktines, or carriage may be removed to meet the air
transportability requirements. Disassembly to achieve air
transportable configuration (see 3.1.2.1), shall be accomplished in
not more than 2 hours and reassembly shall be accomplished in not
more than 2 hours using only common tools and available lifting
devices. The forklift trucks shall be capable of being driven on and
off the aircraft in the transportable configuration. The truck shall
be provided with a minimum of 20 gallons of fuel in the tank. All
removed parts shall be transportable with the truck in the aircraft.
3.1.3.3 Rail transportability. The forklift shall have
unrestricted movement by railroad when loaded on a 50-inch high flat
car in accordance with MIL-HDBK-157. The forklift shall withstand
railroad humping without permanent deformation or damage to any of
its components when secured to the flatcar in accordance with the
Association of American Railroads (AAR) Rules Governing the Loading
of Department of Defense Material on Open Top Cars. The railroad
impact test shall be in accordance with MIL-STD-810.
3.1.3.4 Marine transportability. The forklift shall be
transportable by breakbulk cargo ships, roll-on/roll-off (RORO)
ships, barge carrying ships (SEABEE), LARC60 and larger amphibious
vessels, and army barges and lighters in accordance with MIL-HDBK-
157.
3.2 First article. When specified (see 6.2), a sample shall be
subjected to first article inspection (see 4.3 and 6.3). Any changes
or deviations of trucks from the approved first article during
production will be subject to the approval of the contracting
officer. Approval of the first article will not relieve the
contractor of his obligation to furnish trucks conforming to this
specification.
3.3 Material. Material shall be as specified herein. Materials not
specified shall be selected by the contractor and shall be subject to
all provisions of this specification. It is encouraged that recycled
material be used when practical as long as it meets the requirements
of this specification (see 6.7).
3.3.1 Dissimilar metals. Dissimilar metals shall not be used in
intimate contact with each other unless suitably protected against
electrolytic corrosion. Dissimilar metals and methods of protecting
them are defined and described in MIL-STD-889.
3.3.1.1 Material deterioration and control The forklift shall be

fabricated from compatible materials, inherently corrosion resistant
or treated to provide protection against the various forms of
