c. Without leakage of water into the torque converter oil
chamber, engine crankcase sump, transmission, transfer case,
instruments, gages, or fuel tank.
d. Without any detrimental leakage into the cab.
3.5 Safety. The truck shall meet the safety requirements specified
in SAE J98 and ANSI B56.6 except as otherwise specified herein. All
rotating and reciprocating parts shall be guarded when such parts are
exposed to contact by operator and maintenance personnel performing
daily maintenance functions. A warning notice shall be stenciled near
the steering hinge on both sides of the forklift, stating "WARNING,
NO CLEARANCE FOR A PERSON STANDING IN THIS AREA", or words to that
effect (see 3.34). Nonfunctional sharp edges projecting points and
,
excessive length of fasteners shall be avoided. Steps and platforms
for entering the forklift shall have antiskid, ice resistant
surfaces. Oil level indicators for engine, transmission, and other
components shall be within easy and safe access of the operator or
maintenance personnel.
3.5.1 Roll over protective structures (ROPS) and falling objects
protective structure (FOPS)  The forklift shall be equipped with a
.
complete ROPS and FOPS structure conforming to SAE J1040 and SAE
J321. Installation and removal of the ROPS and FOPS shall be
accomplished without cutting or welding. The ROPS and FOPS shall be
free from sharp edges, particularly at any point where a sling may
come in contact during lifting (see 3.31). A restraint system shall
be provided which will retain operator's torso within ROPS in the
event of rollover.
3.5.2 Seatbelt. An adjustable, weather-resistant seatbelt with a
corrosion-resistant, metal-to-metal, quick-release buckle conforming
to SAE J386, type I shall be furnished and be anchored to the seat in
accordance with SAE J787.
3.5.3 Backup alarm. A backup alarm conforming to SAE J994 type A,
B or C shall be furnished. The backup alarm signal shall be audible
above, and distinguishable from the surrounding vehicle noise level.
3.6 Human factors. The characteristics of the forklift, with cab,
ROPS and FOPS installed, shall provide for operation and maintenance
in daylight and darkness by personnel ranging from the small person
clothed, through the large person arctic clothed, in accordance with
SAE J833, SAE J925, and MIL-STD-1472 as specified herein.
3.6.1 Noise limits. The noise produced by the forklift shall
conform with MIL-STD-1474 requirements when tested in accordance with
specification, paragraph 4.6.2.27. The provisions of MIL-STD-1474,
paragraph 4.3 and 4.4 shall be provided if and only if MIL-STD-1474,
paragraph 5.1.1.2 procedures have been pursued and documented to the
satisfaction of the procuring activity and written permission to
exceed the 85dB(A) limit is obtained from the procuring activity.
