3.5.2 Cabinets. Cabinets, partitions, and shelves shall be constructed of not less than
20 gage (0.0359 inch) high tensile steel or 18 gage (0.0478 inch) carbon steel, single thickness,
reinforced, or 22 gage (0.0299 inch) carbon steel, double panel, reinforced. The cabinet doors
shall be double panel, reinforced construction of not less than 22 gage (0.0299 inch) sheet steel.
The doors shall be weatherproof and constructed to maintain fit and alinement in service. The
doors shall have continuous rod or hem type, heavy duty hinges, with stainless steel hinge pin
and stainless steel, nylon, or bronze insert sockets. Latches shall have recessed-handles.
Cylinder type locks, keyed alike, shall be installed in each door. Moving parts of latches and
locks shall be constructed of or plated with corrosion-resistant material. The cabinet doors over
44 inches in height or length shall have pillar bolts or two latches. Horizontal doors shall have
corrosion-resistant stay chains and shall be reinforced for use as shelves capable of supporting a
live load of not less than 25 pounds on any square foot of area. The cabinets and shelves shall be
capable of supporting a live load of 100 pounds on any square foot of area. Rubber fenders shall
be installed around the rear wheelwells, extending to at least the outside of the tires.
3.5.2.1 Cabinet arrangement. Vertical cabinets shall have a minimum length of 18, 24,
or 30 inches and horizontal cabinets shall have a minimum length of 54 or 59 inches arranged as
shown in tables VI and VII and as follows:
(a) Full height front vertical cabinets shall be a minimum of 15 inches in depth, and
44 inches in height and shall be equipped with bolted on or screwed on rope hooks
(b) Full height rear vertical cabinets shall be a minimum of 15 inches in depth and
45 inches in height
(c) Intermediate vertical cabinets shall be a minimum of 15 inches in depth
(d) Horizontal cabinets shall be located over the wheelwell housings and shall be a
minimum of 15 inches in depth, 20 inches in height and 59 inches in length for
model 4x2 and model 4x4, and 54 inches in length for model 6x4 and 6x6
(e) Horizontal cabinets shall be equipped with small parts bins with adjustable spacers,
shelves, and partitions and a rubber goods compartment which shall be insulated and
vented. Vertical cabinets shall be equipped with not less than two adjustable tray
type shelves. A water cask, when required (see 3.5.6), shall be mounted in the
curbside vertical compartment. An insulated hot stick compartment for
accommodating hot sticks at least 10 feet in length shall be furnished in either the
streetside or curbside cabinets.
3.5.2.2 Racks, type II. Type II vehicles shall be furnished with equipment racks. The
equipment racks and shelves shall be provided above the cabinets, and shall open to the center
aisle. Swivel type hooks shall be provided on each side of the aisle. Outside holders for
six pike-poles shall be provided on one side and ladder hooks with retainers shall be provided on
the other side.
