3.5.2.4 Breaker strips. Wood breaker strips shall be of hardwood or dense southern yellow
pine, of not less than 1-1/16 inches in finished thickness. The breaker strips shall be installed
between the longitudinal sills and the vehicle chassis frame and shall have a taper of 1 inch in
18 inches at the forward end. When a chassis mounted rear winch is specified, the breaker strip
shall terminate rearward of the winch and the taper is not required.
3.5.3 Fenders. Rear fenders with heavy rubber splash guards shall be provided over the rear
wheels. The fenders shall be of not less than 14 gage (0.0747 inch) sheet steel. A fender flange
around the wheel cutout shall be furnished. The fenders shall be at least the width of the rear
dual tires. The fenders shall be supported by the chassis frame and shall be demountable with
hand tools.
3.5.4 Electrical wiring. All body wiring shall be in conduit. Splices are not acceptable. All
wiring ends shall have staked lugs or connectors. Wiring shall be in accordance with
SAE J1292. Wiring shall be coded. Floodlights and interior body lights shall be furnished with
three-way switches at the lamps and on the vehicle chassis cab instrument panel.
3.5.5 Body lighting.
*  3.5.5.1 Floodlights. Two sealed beam, 12-volt, 100-watt, universal mounted floodlights
shall be furnished for night cargo-transfer operations. The floodlights shall be a minimum of
5-1/2 inches in diameter and shall be corrosion-resistant. For type I stake and platform vehicles,
the floodlights shall be located at the rear of the platform and shall be mounted in a position to
prevent breakage. For type II van type vehicles, the floodlights shall be located on the outside
front wall of the body on either side of the front roll-up door, shall be operable from the front cab
platform (see 3.7.11) and shall not protrude above the body roof line. When specified (see 6.2),
two additional floodlights capable of being rotated 360 degrees horizontally shall be mounted on
the front of the type I stake and platform body or on the rear of type II van body.
*  3.5.5.2 Interior lighting, type II van vehicles. Eight interior lights shall be furnished on
type II vans. Four lamps shall be on both sides of the body. The lights shall be recessed within
the side walls. The lights shall be rated at a minimum of 25 watts per lamp. The lamps shall
have guards to prevent damage. The guards shall be hinged at the top and shall be secured to
prevent movement.
*  3.5.5.3 Flashing warning lights. Two red flashing warning lights shall be furnished. The
warning lights shall flash whenever the body is being elevated or retracted. One light shall be
located on the front of the bulkhead and one at the rear for type I stake and platform and one
light shall be located over the front door and one over the rear door for type II van. Both lights
shall be outside the van.
