3.6.1 Type II wrecker unit. The wrecker unit shall be a welded steel topping lift frame,
mounting swinging booms on each side, incorporating stabilizing outriggers, two power operated
load line winches, and two hand operated topping lift winches, as a unit assembly.
3.6.2 Type II body structure. The body structure shall conform to 3.5.2.
3.6.3 Type II front push bumper. A front push bumper as specified in 3.5.3 shall be provided.
3.6.4 Type II backplate. The backplate shall be constructed of minimum 6.4 mm (0.25 inch)
steel plate, flanged at the bottom, reinforced and mounted to transfer the loads imposed on the
back chassis frame. The backplate shall be the full width of the vehicle and not less than 560 mm
(22 inches) from the bottom flange to the top edge of the plate. Slots for scotch block chains
shall be furnished. Taillights, stoplights, and directional signal lights shall be inset into the
backplate.
3.6.5 Type II frame structure. A welded steel topping lift frame shall be provided for the two
swinging booms and shall be supported with a back stay. The frame structure shall support the
load and the topping lift winches as well as the booms and outriggers; shall be mounted forward
of the rear spring front hanger bracket; and shall be attached to and supported by the truck frame.
3.6.6 Type II load line winches. The winch drum pull rated capacity with a single line on the
bare drum shall have a safety factor of not less than 2.0. Winches shall conform to or exceed the
requirements of SAE J706. The power takeoff, operable from the cab, shall be of a capacity to
operate the winches simultaneously. Separate and independent forward and reverse winch drum
drives shall include machine-cut gears, clutch and self-locking worm and wheel. Worm gearing
shall be alined, lubricated, and housed in a dust- and oil-tight case. A means shall be provided for
free unreeling of the load lines. An automatic drum brake shall prevent overtravel of drum when
free-unreeling. Load lines shall be equipped with hooks of sufficient capacity for rated loads.
3.6.7 Type II winch and throttle controls. Two sets of winch and throttle controls shall be
provided, one on each side at the rear. Throttle control head shall be corrosion-resistant twist
lock, push-button lock, or micro-adjustable mechanism. Push-pull cable control shall be recessed.
Control cables shall be stainless steel with a neoprene or equivalent outer cover. Control cables
or rods shall be routed and anchored to prevent damage and interference with operations by snow
and ice. Operating positions of the controls shall be shown on corrosion-resistant metal or
weather-resistant plastic instruction plates. Corrosion-resistant metal or weather-resistant plastic
