4.5.1.33 Engine starting on grades and slopes test. To determine conformance to 3.5.2
and 3.6.5, the engine shall start and oil pressure and temperature shall be maintained when
operating on specified grades and slopes with fuel tanks filled to no more than 50 percent of
capacity. The 60 percent grade test may be conducted in conjunction with brake holding test.
4.5.1.34 Stopping test. To determine conformance to 3.6.6.1, the vehicle shall be
operated on dry, level, hard-surfaced roads without loose material and the results of three
consecutive stopping tests shall be averaged to make this determination.
4.5.1.35 Holding test. To determine conformance to 3.6.6.2, the added load required to
simulate combat loaded vehicle shall be placed on the vehicle in position that will not restrict the
flow of engine air (intake or exhaust). The vehicle shall be driven up a 60 percent dry, hard
grade. Service brakes and parking brakes are checked for conformance. The engine starting and
fuel system tests on a 60 percent slope may be conducted in conjunction with this test.
4.5.1.36 Turning test. To determine conformance to 3.6.7, vehicle shall be operated and
pivoted 360 to right and left in neutral steer range and checked for functional requirements.
During this test, the vehicle shall be brought to a full stop before reversing turning direction.
The full pivots shall be accomplished within 35 feet diameter circle.
4.5.1.37 Fording test. To determine conformance to 3.6.8.1 and 3.6.8.5, the vehicle shall
be driven into water of specified depth with engine compartment drain valves open and without
special equipment. During or after test period water accumulation on crew compartment hull
floor shall not be more than specified depth. The engine shall idle at 1,000 rpm for 15 minutes,
stopped, and restarted in not more than 3 minutes with all accessories functioning satisfactorily
during and after fording. The procedure employed in maintaining test facility cleanliness shall
be furnished to the Government.
4.5.1.38 Drain valves check. To determine conformance to 3.6.8.3, inspection
equipment shall be attached to the end of the handgrip of the front valve lever and actuated as
specified. The rear valve lever shall have the gage attached and actuated as specified. The front
and rear drain valve levers shall operate at forces specified and valve checked for functional
requirements.
4.5.1.39 Inflatable seal and pump check. To determine conformance to 3.6.8.4, the
pump shall be actuated to arrive at specified pressure as indicated on inflatable seal pressure
gage. The indicated pressure loss during a 30 minute period shall not exceed 5 psi. Caution: the
pressure shall be relieved at the conclusion of this test.
4.5.1.40 Turret and gun control system checks. To determine conformance to 3.6.12.1
with the turret level within 1, the following tests shall be performed. Gun elevation and
depression tests may be performed in conjunction with gun fire control tests. Throughout these
