MIL-W-50986A (AR)
sample to the configuration illustrated in Figure 2.  A simple
arithmetic mean (average) of the eight penetration values shall be
computed.  A mean of less than 10.50 inches shall require that the
lot be rejected.  Each warhead shall be x-rayed in accordance with
the procedures of MIL-STD-453 by directing the beam normal to the
longitudinal axis of the warhead.  The warhead charge shall be
radiographed twice, the second picture to be displaced 90 degrees
from the first.  Both views shall be normal to the warhead
longitudinal axis.  The penetrameter used in the application
specified in MIL-STD-453 shall be designed and constructed to
insure a two percent (2%) sensitivity.  In addition, the
sensitivity of x-ray technique shall be 2.0 percent, and the
photographic density of the film used shall be no less than 1.25.
NOTE :  All local safety regulations shall be observed and
precautions taken consistent with the handling of loaded items.
4.5.5.1 Target stack.  Mild steel is defined as Carbon Steel
Plate or Rod.  For the purpose of obtaining penetration values,
Carbon Steel Plate or Rod of Structural Quality shall be used.
The target material shall meet the following requirements:
a.  The hardness of the target material shall be from 116
to 156 Brinell,
b.  The requirements of ASTM-A-36 or AISI-C-1018 with the
revision that the tensile strength shall be within a minimum of
58,000 psi and a maximum of 80,000 psi.
c.  The plates shall have a nominal thickness of two
inches or 4 inches as applicable.
d.  The cylinders shall have a diameter of five inches
and shall be five inches long.
e.  Samples for testing.  Each plate or rod as-rolled
shall meet the requirements stated above.  "As-rolled" is defined
as the original total product rolled from a slab or directly from
an ingot.  The test specimens used shall be taken from the mill
product in accordance  with the AISI Steel Products Manual.
The hardness determination shall be made on each plate or
rod-as-rolled and on a representative sample of the plates or
rods-as-cut for target stacking.  The representative sample of the
plates or rods-as-cut shall be selected randomly in accordance
with special inspection level S-3 of MIL-STD-105, using the Single
