MIL-C-46946B(OS)
disintegration of the primer, propellant, or igniter, or derangement of any component (see 4.7.7
and 6.2).
3.6 Functional requirements.
3.6.1 Primer sensitivity. The primer shall fire when drop tested at an energy level of 120
inch-ounces in a sectioned cartridge void of igniter and propellant charge (see 4.7.8.1).
3.6.2 Cartridge performance.
3.6.2.1 Misfires. The cartridge shall not fail to fire.
3.6.2.2 Ballistics. The cartridge shall meet the ballistic requirements of a or b:
a. The cartridge, when assembled into an acceptable M2A2 Thruster and fired under load
(see 6.5) at  65 to  70 F, 65 to 75 F, and 200 to 205 F, shall deliver a stroke of 5.7
inches minimum and move an approved ejection seat (or an equivalent load) either upward or
downward with a maximum final velocity of 12 feet per second (fps) so that the ejection seat
will be in a final position for ejection.
b. The cartridge, when assembled in an M17 or M18 Thruster and fired under load (see 6.5)
at  65 to  70 F, 65 to 75 F, and 200 to 205 F, shall move a 350-pound weight
horizontally through a distance of 13 1/4 1/16 inches, when fired against a 1-gravity
(g) resistive force. A velocity shall be imparted to the weight that does not exceed 12
feet per second and an acceleration that does not exceed 6 g/second. The cartridge, when
fired in a thruster, shall impart to the weight an acceleration where the rate of change of
acceleration does not exceed 60 g/second.
3.6.2.3 Initiation. The thruster shall be fired by a source delivering an output pressure of
700
+ 25, 0 pounds per square inch gage (psig) at the end of 15 feet of aircraft hose, MS28741-4, at
70 5 F.
3.7 Workmanship. Cartridges shall be free of cracks, splits, or other defects which might
prevent proper mating with connecting parts or proper functioning of the device.
3.7.1  Metal defects.  All components shall be free from cracks, splits, cold shuts,
inclusions, porosity, or any similar defect.
3.7.2 Burr. No part shall have a burr which might interfere with the assembly or function of
the item or which might be injurious to personnel handling the item.
