messages using 1200 plus or minus 10 Hz to represent a "mark" and
2400 plus or minus 10 Hz to represent a "space".
3.2.1.10 Data rate.  The MBC shall transmit and receive
messages at 600 plus or minus 0.6 and 1200 plus or minus 1.2 bits
per second with FSK frequencies of 1200 and 2400 Hz.

operator-selected self test capability.
3.2.2 Physical characteristics.  The physical characteristics
shall be as prescribed by the drawings, specifications, and QAP's.
3.2.3  Reliability.  When specified in the contract, a special
sample shall be subjected to reliability testing. The
manufacturing and production techniques emloyed in the fabrication
of the MBC shall not degrade the inherent reliability. The
inherent reliability shall not be less than 16,585 hours Mean Tim
Between Failures (MTBF).(See 4 and 6)
3.3  Environmental.  The MBC shall meet the requirements
specified herein unless otherwise specified.
3.3.1 Room ambient temperature.  The requirements of this
specification shall be met with the MBC stabilized at room ambient
temperature of +16C to +32C (+60F to +90F), unless
otherwise specified in the requirements paragraph.
3.3.2 Environmental stress screen (ESS) temperature.  The MBC
shall meet the requirements of 3.2.1.1 and 3.2.1.11 inclusive,
after having been exposed to a minimum of eight temperature cycles

at temperatures of -57 C and +71 C (-71 F and +160 F).
3.3.3 Operating temperature. The MBC shall meet the
requirements of 3.2.1.1 and 3.2.1.11 inclusive, while exposed to a
0
minimum of0 eight temperature cycles at temperatures of -40 C and
0
0
+71 C (-40 F and +160 F).
3.3.4 Environmental stress screen (ESS) vibration. The MBC
shall meet the requirements of 3.2.1.1 and 3.2.1.11 inclusive
after having been subjected to a random or pseudorandom vibration
which includes frequency content from 100 Hz to 1000 HZ and up to
a 3g RMS in two axis for a period of 10 minutes plus or minus 15
seconds.
3.3.5 Immersion. The MBC shall show no signs of leakage when
immersed under 36 inches plus or minus 5 inches for a period of
