3.5.2 Tests.
4.5.2.1 Test conditions. Unless otherwise specified in a test, tests shall be performed
without shelter and at the climatic conditions existing at the place of test. The distributor shall
operate as specified herein without maintenance other than the contractor's recommended normal
scheduled maintenance as established by a maintenance schedule prepared and submitted by the
contractor prior to test.
4.5.2.2 Portable burner. Start the burner and fire at maximum rate. Insert the burner into the
pump housing and observe the impingement of the flame. Determine the rate of fuel
consumption for a period of not less than 15 minutes. Impingement of the flame on the pump
packing or bearings, or fuel consumption of less than 0.5 gallon per hour shall constitute failure
of this test.
4.5.2.3 Commercial engine. During the distributor operational test specified in 4.5.2.8 and
4.5.2.10, the commercial engine speed and intake manifold vacuum shall be measured and
recorded at 30-minute intervals for the duration of the test. These readings shall be compared
with the engine speed and horsepower ratings published by the engine manufacturer. Any intake
manifold vacuum reading recorded during the distributor operational test that is lower than the
reading listed on the engine manufacturer's published continuous horsepower rating, or
90 percent of the engine manufacturer's published maximum horsepower rating, at the applicable
speeds (rpm) shall constitute failure of this test.
4.5.2.4 Slinging attachments.
4.5.2.4.1 Test procedures.
a. Lift the distributor and hold in suspension in its normal travel position using slings
that converge not more than 24 feet above the lowest extremity of the distributor.
Determine the forward angles of application for each attachment. Measure the
clearance between each sling and the distributor. Measure eye openings and
clearance dimensions of the attachments.
b. Restrain the distributor by anchoring the main frame and subject each provision to a
force equal to the load factor specified in MIL-STD-209 times the load it carried in
a. above. An alternate method of test is to lift the distributor as in a. above and add
weights to the main frame until the required force is obtained. Hold the distributor
under either of the above loading conditions for at least 90 seconds.
4.5.2.4.2 Failure criteria. Weld failure or permanent deformation caused by lifting or failure
to meet requirements of MIL-STD-209, shall constitute failure of this test.
