3.11.3 Vents. Vents shall be provided to allow for expansion of the water in the tank and
discharging the tank at maximum rate with the manhole and fill cover sealed.
3.11.4 Catwalk and ladder. A catwalk not less than 24-inches wide shall be provided over
the top of the tank. The catwalk shall be centrally located at the manhole. The catwalk shall
withstand a minimum loading of 300-pounds on each square foot and shall be of the open serrated
grating type. A non-skid access ladder shall provided for access to the catwalk. Both catwalk
and ladder shall be in accordance with SAE J185. All operator access areas shall be equipped
with non-skid decking surfaces and handholds that permit use of arctic mittens as shown in
SAE J925.
3.11.5 Rear running gear. The rear running gear on the rear section of the distributor shall
include a non-driving axle or twin spindles having the same interchangeable tire and wheel
assemblies as the tractor. The equipment rear timing gear shall be equipped with rear fenders to
restrict mud throwing and splash from the tire. The fenders shall support a minimum weight of
300 pounds over any 1 square foot area.
3.12 Pump. A hydraulically driven, minimum 4-inch centrifugal pump shall be installed either
in the tank or at the rear of the tank. The pump shall be of the self-loading type. The pump
self-loading system shall include plumbing and valving with an isolating auxiliary water section in
the main tank of at least 100 gallons to assure at least two primings of the water pump. Pump
impeller materials shall be corrosion resistant. The pump, shall be capable of lifting water from
10-feet below ground level through the 30-feet of suction hose to self-load water to the top of the
tank. The pump and tank shall be equipped with a low water level warning indicator. Waterproof
instruction cards, in accordance with 3.21, shall be furnished to provide the operator with the
water distribution rate on the ground in gallon-per-100-foot length pattern, correlated to the
following variables:
a. First and second transmission geared speeds at governed engine rpm.
b. Water pump speeds of 100 percent and 50 percent of engine governed rpm.
c. Per nozzle at maximum opening size, using 1, 2, 3, and 4 nozzles.
3.13 Plumbing. The distributor plumbing shall conform to the following:
a. Provide a mesh screen strainer in the pump inlet line which is removable and accessible
for cleaning to prevent damage to the pump.
b. Provide an outlet valve with remote operator control; locate valves within the
perimeter of the distributor and include break-away-joints between the valve and the
nozzles.
c. Provide plumbing to the water distribution system using metal water pipe covered by
ASTM A 120 and plastic water pipe covered by ASTM D 2239, D 2737, or D 2751.
d. Provide bath gravity and pump pressure feed from the tank to the water distribution
system; in addition, also furnish a capped outlet fitting for future user installation of a
multi-nozzle, transverse rear spraybar.
