3.21.2 Clutch and clutch control. The engine shall be equipped with a
hand-operated, over-center, engagement-type friction clutch with a rated
capacity of not less than 150 percent of maximum engine torque. The clutch
lining shall conform to KKK-L-370, type I or II. A hand control shall be
provided for operation of the clutch by an operator standing on the ground.
3.22 Mixer. The asphalt mixer shall consist of a hopper and apron feeder
if necessary, water pump transfer pump, metering pump, spray chamber, pug-
mill, discharge chutes, and all other accessories, piping, and components
necessary for the operation of the unit as specified herein. The mixer shall
be supported to provide a minimum height of 8 feet between the discharge
hopper and the ground when installed on level ground. The hopper and feeder
maybe mounted on a cart-type trailer.
3.22.2 Intake hoppe r. When specified, an intake hopper of not less than.
8 cubic yards shall be provided to receive aggregate from the hot-aggregate
elevator or the portable conveyor. The hopper shall be constructed of sheet
steel not less than 0.100 inch in thickness. The hopper shall be equipped
with a calibrated feed gate that can be adjusted to any position from closed
to at least a 10-inch-high opening in increments of 1/16 inch, and shall be
provided with a position indicator and positive locking device. The hopper
shall be provided with a device to indicate when sufficient aggregate is in .
the hopper for mixer operation.
3.22.3 Apron feeder. The intake hopper, when furnished, shall be provided
with an apron feeder of sufficient capacity to supply aggregate to the pugmill
during maximum rated mixer operations. The apron feeder shall be equipped.
with flights and side rails to prevent leakage ad spillage of material. All
parts of the feeder shall be accessible for removal of oversized or foreign
material and for cleaning. The feeder shall be provided with all necessary

metering pump drive 80 as to provide, automatically and accurately, a positive
and continuous proportional delivery of aggregate and asphalt. A clutch shall
be provided in the drive mechanism to allow disengagement of the feeder when
it is desired to run the metering pump alone. The control lever for the clutch
shall be located on the operator's platform. The apron feeder shall be
equipped with a five-digit revolution counter to indicate the revolutions of
the feeder foot shaft. The counter shall conform to 3.19.7.
