MIL-P-17840C(SH)
temperature exceeds 200F and the normal operating temperature is less than or
equal to 200F, the packing and alignment test shall be repeated satisfactorily
with the pumped fluid at normal operating temperature'.
Acceptance criteria: The stabilized packing leak rate, defined as that
measured at least 30 minutes after the last packing adjustment, shall be within
the limit recommended by the pump vendor.  Vibration shall not exceed the
limits specified in MIL-STD-167-1, type II, measured on the bearing caps.
There shall be no smoking or scorching of packing and no scoring (vice
polishing) of the shaft sleeve.
4.6.6 Shock test.
4.6.6.1 Unless otherwise specified in the contract or order (see 6.2.1),
one complete pumping unit of each size shall be shock tested to assure com-
pliance with the requirements specified in 3.2.3.
4.6.6.2 Equipment exactly duplicating that previously shock tested and
accepted need not be retested except when evidence of low shock resistance
develops in installed units.  NAVSEA will initiate action with the manufacturer
for correction of deficiencies and reserves the right to require additional
shock tests.
4.6.6.3 Pump units shall be shock tested with drivers. Motors shall be
shock tested in accordance with the applicable motor specifications (see 6.2.1).
4.6.6.4 Pump units shall be shock tested running and at standstill on
alternate blows.
4.6.6.5 The pump unit shall be considered to have failed to pass the
shock tests in the event of any of the following:
(a) Breakage of parts, including mounting bolts.
(b) Appreciable distortion or dislocation of a part, such as shaft,
mounting feet and bearings.
(c) A mechanical unbalance of more than two times the amplitude of
unbalance measured prior to test at rated speed, or q ore than
that permitted by the specifications for the driver. The
amplitude of unbalance both before and after the shock tests
and the speed at which measured shall be recorded in the shock
test report.
4.6.6.6 If a manufacturer is unable to conduct these tests at his own
plant, he may arrange to have them conducted at a commercial laboratory or
Government laboratory.  Where shock tests are conducted at a Government labor-
atory, copies of the applicable drawings shall accompany the units.
4.6.6.7 Pump units which have passed the shock test shall be considered
acceptable for such service as NAVSEA may authorize.  The equipment shall be
reconditioned by the manufacturer as follows:
(a) Minor deformations of mounting flanges shall be corrected.
(b) Minor deformations affecting alignment shall be corrected.
(c) Bearings shall be replaced.
