3.2 Materials, construction and design. Materials, construction,
and design requirements shall be as specified herein and shall be in
accordance with the approved manufacturing models. The action and parts
in rolling or sliding contact shall. be of hardened steel. Staked or
dovetailed members shall have sufficient temper to retain their original
fit after extended use.
3.2.1 General characteristics. General characteristics shall be
in accordance with Table I.

3.2.2 Human engineering characteristics. Pistol design shall
meet with the approval of the bid sample evaluation and test agency
(see 3.1) for human engineering characteristics such as size, shape and
balance deemed essential for expert match shooting.
3.2.3 Barrel. The barrel bore and chamber shall be free of
scratches, pits, rings, cracks and seams.
3.2.4 Finishes.
3.2.4.1 Machine finish. Machine finishes shall be in accordance
with commercial practice for the type of pistol furnished. Approved
manufacturing models (see 3.1.1) shall be used as standards for machine
finishes for pistols to be supplied under the contract. In the event
of a dispute over the comparison of finishes of the manufacturing models
and the production pistols, referee comparison shall be made in accord.

3.2.4.2 Final protective finish. The exterior metallic surfaces
shall be polished and blued, or finished in such other manner as approved
by the procuring agency. The finish shall be applied so as not to draw
the temper or alter the form or dimensions of components sufficiently
to affect functioning. The finish shall be uniform in texture and appear-
ance. Approved manufacturing models (see 3.1.1) shall be used as standards
for final protective finishes for pistols to be supplied under the contract.
