3.9.1 Processing Defects.-The projectile, metal parts shall be free of
dents, scratches, cuts, sharp edges, burrs, and other forms of substandard
workmanship.
3.9.2 Cleanliness. -The projectile, metal parts shall be free of all
foreign matter.
4. QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS
4.1 Responsibility for Inspection.-Unless otherwise specified in the con-
tract or purchase order, the supplier is responsible for the performance
of all inspection requirements as specified herein.  Except as othewise
specified in the contract or order, the supplier may use his own or other
facilities suitable for the performance of the inspection requirements
specified herein, unless disapproved by the Government.  The Government
reserves the right to perform any of the inspections set forth in the
specification where such inspections are deemed necessary to assure supplies
and services conform to prescribed requirements.
4.1.1  Quality Assurance Terms and Definitions.-Reference shall be made to
MIL-STD-109 for definition of quality assurance terms.
4.1.2 Bar Stock Verification.-Independent of tests and inspections per-
formed by the steel bar suppliers, an examination shall be made on each
lot of bars.  The inspections and tests used to verify the bar stock quality
shall be as specified by MIL-S-46070, Table IV, using the requirements,
acceptance criteria and test methods referenced therein, with the following
modifications:
Chemical composition:  Sulphur only is required.
Mechanical properties:  Unmodified.
Grain size:  Unmodified.
Soundness:
Macro-etch
Billet:  See Note 1.
Bar:  See Note 1.
Magnetic:  See Note 1
Surface decarburization:  Not required.
Dimensions:  Diameter only
Workmanship:  See Note 1.
Note 1.  The suppliers' macro-etch, magnetic and visual inspection shall
be monitored to the extent necessary to assure compliance with MIL-S-46070.
4.2 Classification of Inspections. -The inspection requirements specified
herein are classified as follows:

First Article Inspection (see 4.3).

Quality Conformance Inspection (see 4.4).
