4. QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS
4 . 1 R e s p o n s i b i l i t y f o r i n s p e c t i o n .  U n l e s s otherwise specified in
t h e contract or purchase order, the supplier is responsible for the per-
f o r m a n c e of all inspection requirements as specified herein. Except as
o t h e r w i s e specified in the contract or order, the supplier may use his
o w n or any other facilities suitable for the performance of the inspection
requirements specified herein, unless disapproved by the Government.  The
Government reserves the right to perform any of the inspections set forth
in the specification where such inspections are deemed necessary to assure
supplies and services conform to prescribed requirements.
4 . 2 Quality assurance terms and definitions. Quality assurance
terms and definitions used herein are in accordance with MIL-STD-109.

4 . 3 F i r s t a r t i c l e i n s p e c t i o n .  F i r s t article sample shall be selected
from early production and submitted for testing in accordance with the con-
t r a c t requirements (see 6.1).  The sample shall be representative of pro-
d u c t i o n processes to be used during quantity production. The first article
s a m p l e shall be subjected to all inspection and tests specified herein, and
such other inspection as necessary to determine that all the requirements
of the contract have been met.

4 . 4 Quality conformance inspection.
4.4.1 Inspection lot.

4 . 4 . 1 . 1  R i f l e s .  T h e number of rifles in an inspection lot shall
b e either 500 or one month's production, whichever is smaller. Rifles
shall be assembled from lots of component parts that have met all in-
s p e c t i o n requirements specified herein.  E n d u r a n c e test lot size shall be
a s specified in 4.4.3.6.1.
4 . 4 . 1 . 2 Parts and packaging.  T h e formation, size, and presentation
o f inspection lots of parts and packaging shall be in accordance with

4.4.2
Examination.
4 . 4 . 2 . 1 Component parts and concurrent repair parts. Examination
of component parts and concurrent repair parts shall be performed in
a c c o r d a n c e with the criteria specified in the contract (see 6.1). The
c o n t r a c t o r ' s examination of these parts shall. be accomplished prior to
their assembly into the end item or submission for acceptance as repair
parts.
