twelve stake pockets, six on each side for the 25-foot platform; sixteen stake pockets, eight on
each side for the 40-foot platform. Stake pockets shall be equally spaced from front to rear of
the loading space, except when interference with critical frame members occurs. The stake
pockets shall be 4 inches square and shall be located inside the inner edge of the outer rails of the
loading space. Stake pockets shall be furnished with drains to prevent entrapment of water.
3.7.7 Lashing D rings Lashing D rings shall be the heavy duty type and shall not protrude
beyond the outer edge of the platform when not in use. Types I level deck and type II drop deck
semitrailers shall have ten lashing rings, located as follows: three on each side of the platform;
one on each side of the gooseneck, inside the outer edges; and two across the rear. Type V level
deck extended 25-foot semitrailer shall have twelve lashing rings, located as follows: four on
each side of the platform; one on each side of the gooseneck, inside the outer edge; and two
across the rear. Type V level deck extended 40-foot semitrailer shall have fourteen lashing rings,
located as follows: five on each side of the platform; one on each side of the gooseneck, inside
the outer edge; and two across the rear. Each lashing ring and its mountings shall be capable of
withstanding pulls of 10,000 pounds in any direction without permanent deformation.
3.7.8 Rails and pockets for loading ramps. Rails or pockets for the attachment of loading
ramps shall be provided at the rear of the semitrailer platform for type I, class A (level deck,
fixed gooseneck) semitrailer and, when specified (see 6.2), shall be provided at the rear for other
types and classes.
*  3.7.9 Platform width extension. When specified (see 6.2), swing-type side extension
brackets for planking shall be furnished to provide at least 1 foot of additional width to each side
of the semitrailer. The number of brackets per side and design shall be the manufacturer's
commercial standard, except in no case shall the bracket center to center spacing be more than
2 feet. Provisions shall be made for folding and locking the brackets against the main frame rails
when the brackets are not being used. The brackets shall be so located, vertically, that when the
removable planks specified in 3.7.1 are in place, the top of the planks shall be level with the
remaining planks in the platform.
*  3.8 Gooseneck. The gooseneck shall be of sufficient length to provide the minimum landing
wheel clearance (turning clearance) specified and narrow enough in width and shaped to meet
the maximum forward swing clearance radius specified.
*  3.8.1 Class A, fixed gooseneck. A fixed, flat type gooseneck shall be provided on class A
semitrailers. The entire area between the gooseneck main frame members shall be inclosed for
use as a tool box. The underside shall be inclosed with a steel plate not less than 3/16 inch thick.
Drain holes shall be provided. The top shall be covered with not less than three hinged deck lids,
arranged to provide access to all storage space. The deck lids shall be of safety tread steel
