3.7 Painting. All semitrailers shall be painted to provide a low reflectance CARC surface.
The camouflage pattern will be supplied by the Government in accordance with Drawing
13226E7194. The final painted surface shall be three color camouflage pattern applied in two
coats at least 1.8 mils thick (total), without sags, runs, or thin areas and shall conform to
MIL-C-46168 or MIL-C-53039. The three color pattern segments required shall be as follows:
a. 41 5% of the surface area shall be of the color black, conforming to chip 37030 of
FED-STD-595.
b. 15 5% of the surface area shall be of the color camouflage brown 383, conforming
to chip 30051 of FED-STD-595.
c. 44 5% of the surface area shall be of the color camouflage green 383, conforming to
chip 34094 of FED-STD-595.
3.7.1 Cleaning and treating. The semitrailer and components shall be cleaned and treated in
accordance with MIL-STD-193 except that all hardware and trim not normally painted shall be
treated to provide a matte finish. In addition, contact areas of ferrous sheet metal 0.125 inch
thickness and under, which cannot be primed after welding or are not zinc clad steel, shall be
cleaned in accordance with TT-C-490 and primed in accordance with MIL-P-46105.
3.8 Rustproofing. The semitrailer shall be rustproofed in accordance with MIL-R-46164.
3.9 Welding. Welding shall not be employed as a repair measure for defective parts.
Welding procedures shall be in accordance with MIL-STD-1261. Weld penetration shall be such
as to provide transfer of maximum design stress through base metals. Fillet welds shall be
provided when necessary to reduce stress concentration.
a. Weld joint design and construction shall provide adequate material for transferral of
load through the joint from one member to another without significant increase in
stress.
b. All welders shall be tested and qualified and submit specimens (samples or actual
parts) simulating all welding conditions. Specimens shall be available to the
government quality assurance representative for each welder prior to performing
production welding. The government quality assurance representative may require
requalification of welders, welding equipment operators or equipment to the recorded
welding procedures when the quality is suspect based on inspection results.
3.10 Marking. The semitrailer exterior markings shall be placed and sized in accordance with
MIL-STD-642. Markings, letters and numbers on the semitrailer shall be lusterless paint
conforming to MIL-C-53039 or MIL-C-46168. Black chip 37030 of FED-STD-595 shall be used
over a green or brown background. Camouflage green 383, chip 34094 of FED-STD-595, shall
be used over black background.
