The pilot also uses the HUDS to observe displayed data for flight
safety.  The pilot observes these data items from his normal head
position.  When certain fire control data are presented, requiring
large translation of fire control symbols, additional head motion
shall be permitted.  The pilot shall have control of display
operation with controls located on the HUD, and shall control
displayed data by the use of externally generated command signals.
The HUDS shall have the following
3.4.2.2 Power control modes.

a.  off.  The HUDS shall not be operational; all electrical power
shall be removed from HUDS circuits.

3.4.2.3 Operational modes.  When the HUDS is in the "ON" power
control mode, the HUDS shall have the following selectable oPerating
modes.  The data and symbols displayed within each mode shall be in
accordance with Table I.
3.4.2.3.1 Stadiametric mode.  Whenever the HUD is placed in the
"STAD" mode, the Stadiametric Reticle (SMR) shall be displayed and
its brightness controlled.  The SMR shall be a backup reticle that
is selected for display in the event of primary failure in the SP'S
interface, processor, or main program memory circuitry.
3.4.2.3.2 Normal mode.  The following data and symbols shall be
displayed when the HUDS is in "NORMAL" mode and the appropriate
control signals are received as specified in Table I.
3.4.2.3.2.1 Boresiqht reference symbol.  The boresight reference
symbol, which serves as the HUDS display reference, shall always be
displayed.
3.4.2.3.2.2 Normal data.  The following alpha numeric data shall
always be displayed when the data exists at the HUDS interface with
the condition that the FCC operation is valid.
