MIL-S-81054A(OS)
4.4.2 Decarburization testing.  Unless otherwise agreed upon by the
procuring activity and supplier, decarburization shall be measured by a
hardness traverse-of the cross-section of a representative hardened bar
or forging,  Hardness readings shall be accomplished by Vickers, Knoop,
or other hardness methods approved by the procuring activity,  The depth
of decarburization shall be measured from the original surface to the
point at which no further increase in hardness occurs. Forgings that
shall be machined on all surfaces to remove 0.050 inch minimum of material
may be exempted from the test,  Decarburization shall conform to the
requirements of 3.3.1.7.1 or 3.3.1.7.2 as applicable,  Depth of the
zone of decarburization below a surface shall be determined by examina-
tion of a metallographic specimen or specimens representing the entire
cross section of bars 1 inch or less in diameter or width,  With bars
over 1 inch in diameter or width, the section shall exhibit not less
than 1 linear inch of the original surface of the bar,  This specimen
shall be polished, etched with 5 percent nital, and examined at 100 diam-
eters magnification,
4.4.3 Ultrasonic testing.  Unless otherwise specified by the procuring
activity, each grade A forging shall be completely inspected in accordance
with MIL-U-81055, quality level I.
4.4. Examination,  Forgings and bars shall be examined to ensure com-
pliance with the requirements of this specification with respect to
workmanship, tolerances, identification, preservation, packing, and marking,
4.5 Rejection.  Forgings or bars that fail to meet all applicable
requirements of this specification shall be rejected.

PACKAGING
5.1 Preservation-packaging,  Unless otherwise specified, all materials
shall be prepared for storage by coating with corrosion preventive com-
