3.5.2.1 Tailgate. The tailgate shall be hinged at the bottom and provided with duck
covered stay-chains of a length to retain the tailgate in a horizontal position. The rear lights and
reflectors shall be recessed in the rear bolster and shall be positioned to preclude damage by
lowering the tailgate.
3.5.2.2 Body frame. The body shall be constructed with welded steel subframe. There
shall be not less than 8 full-width crossmembers, including ends, and stub crossmembers as
required to provide rigidity. The crossmembers shall be of full channel, pressed steel
construction, reinforced by gusset plates or brackets at point of attachment to longitudinal sills.
Crossmembers shall be welded to the body shell with not less than 4 inch lengths of weld, front
and rear of both ends of each crossmember, and with staggered intermittent welds of not less
than 4 inch lengths, on not more than 12 inch centers. Contact edges of the crossmembers with
longitudinal sills and contact edges of welded reinforcements shall be welded for not less than
50 percent of the edge length.

3.5.3 Stake dump body (type III). Type III vehicles shall have rear-of-cab to rear-axle
and body dimensions specified in table IV. Rear bumper shall be furnished. When specified
(see 6.2), the center racks on both sides shall be the manufacturer's standard swing type, for easy
side loading.
