4.5.2.2 Performance. Two tampers shall be operated either concurrently or nonconcurrently,
on uncompacted soil at maximum governed engine speed for a period of not less than eight hours
of compacting work per tamper. Nonconformance to the requirements of this specification or
any failures as defined in 4.5.2.2.1 shall be cause for rejection of the first article tampers by the
Government.
4.5.2.2.1 Failure definition. A failure is any malfunction, including but not limited to a
malfunction or failure of any control, undesigned leakage of lubricant, leakage of fuel, loosening
of any fasteners, or engine failure.
4.5.2.3 Run-in. Each tamper shall be subjected to a run-in of not less than 15 minutes during
which all controls shall be adjusted to the proper settings and then operated. Any failure
(see 4.5.2.2.1) shall constitute failure of this test.
4.5.2.4 Temperature. The tamper shall be operated at maximum governed engine speed for
a period of not less than eight hours of compacting work (including downtime for normal
servicing and refueling) at an ambient environmental temperature of not less than 110F.
Nonconformance to 3.13 or any failure (see 4.5.2.2.1) shall constitute failure of this test.
4.5.2.5 Humidity. The tamper shall be operated at maximum governed engine speed for a
period of not less than eight hours of compacting work (including downtime for normal servicing
and refueling) at an ambient environmental relative humidity of not less than 100 percent.
Nonconformance to 3.13 or any failure (see 4.5.2.2.1) shall constitute failure of this test.
4.5.2.6 Fuel test. The tamper shall be operated at full engine throttle for a period of not less
than one hour of compacting work at ambient environmental conditions. Nonconformance to
3.13 or any failure (see 4.5.2.2.1) shall constitute failure of this test.
4.5.2.7 Compacting frequency. The tamper shall be measured according to the Construction
Industry Manufacturers Association, Light Equipment Manufacturers Bureau Standard
Number 1. Nonconformance to 3.13 or any failure (see 4.5.2.2.1) shall constitute failure of this
test.
4.5.2.8 Compacting force. The tamper shall be measured according to the Construction
Industry Manufacturers Association, Light Equipment Manufacturers Bureau Standard
Number 1. Nonconformance to 3.13 or any failure (see 4.5.2.2.1) shall constitute failure of this
test.
