MIL-T-62491C
3.5.1.1 Type I hydraulic wrecker unit. The wrecker unit shall have a welded steel frame
mounting a two- or three-stage power telescoping and power elevating boom and power operated
winch(s) as a unit assembly.
3.5.1.2 Lifting capability. The wrecker shall be capable of lifting a load equal to its lifting
capacity as specified in 1.2.2. The wrecker shall be capable of extending, retracting, raising and
lowering with loads as specified herein. Controls for operating the boom, winches and wheel-lift
shall operate smoothly, with the loads specified, to avoid producing shock loads. The boom,
winch and wheel-lift assembly shall maintain loads imposed as specified without slippage when
controls are released. Snatch blocks shall be used, as required, to prevent exceeding the cable
working load limit.
* 3.5.1.3 Type I hydraulic wrecker boom extension cylinders. With the boom fully retracted
and positioned within 9 degrees of horizontal, a load equal to 75 percent of the extended boom
rating specified in line "h" of table X shall be capable of being extended to the extended boom
dimension specified in line "j" of table X.
3.5.1.4 Type I hydraulic wrecker boom elevation cylinder(s) (retracted). With the boom fully
retracted and positioned at an angle of 20 degrees above horizontal, the boom elevation
cylinder(s) shall be capable of lifting a load equal to 55 percent of the retracted boom rating
specified in line "g" of table X.
3.5.1.5 Type I hydraulic wrecker boom elevation cylinder(s) (extended). With the boom in
the extended position (see line "j" of table X) and positioned at an angle of 20 degrees above
horizontal, the boom elevation cylinder(s) shall be capable of lifting a load equal to the extended
boom rating specified in line "h" of table X.
3.5.2 Type I body structure. The body shall be of the deck type with flanged side plates of
carbon steel, or of aluminum of equivalent strength. Wheelhousings or fenders shall cover the
rear wheels. When the width over the tires exceeds the body width, rubber fenders extending out
to the width over the tires shall be provided. The floor shall be steel or aluminum, safety tread
diamond plate, reinforced to support not less than 1460 kg/m2 (300 pounds per square foot) of
area. The minimum thickness of the body shall be as shown in table XI for the specified vehicle
size. Mounting aids shall be provided on each side of the body or, on each side of the rear, for
access to the deck. Means for draining rain water from the deck shall be provided. The deck may
have a kick-up over the rear axle and may be slanted toward the ground behind the rear axle; sizes
5T and 7T deck may be slanted from behind the cab to the end of the deck. Hook loops shall be
provided at the rear and, except for sizes 5T and 7T, at the sides, all for use when the load is
double-reeved with snatch block(s). Lights mounted on the side plates shall be recessed or shall
be of the armored type.
