3.4 Material. Material shall be as specified herein. Material not
specified be selected by the supplier and shall be subject to all pro-
visions of this specification.
3.5 sound level. The sound level of the tamper shall be in accordance
with MIL-STD-1474, 88 dB(A) for steady-state noise when tested in accordance
with 4.6.2.5.1. The sound level shall comply with the exterior noise re-
quirements of MIL-STD-1474 when tested in accordance with 4.6.2.5.2 (aural
nondetectability and impulse noise do not apply). The precautions of MIL-
STD-1474 (see 6.4) shall be provided if the sound level exceeds 85 dB(A)
when tested in accordance with 4.6.2.5 l 3. Hearing protectors shall not be
supplied with the tamper.
3.6 Tampering pad. The pad shall be of malleable iron or cast steel, with
a circular base having a diameter of not less than 5 inches nor more than 6
inches. The pad shall be attached to the piston rod by means of a locking
screw or nut. A maintenance tool shall be furnished for removing pad lock-
ing screw or nut l
3.7 Body. The body shall be made of alloy steel or malleable iron.
The throttle valve shall be of the self-closing,
3.8 Throttle valve.
lever-operated type.
3.9 Latch. A latch shall be furnished to lock the valve lever.
3.10 Piston rod. The piston rod shall be made from one piece of bar-
stock or machined forged steel.
3.13 Seal. A seal for wiping the piston rod shall be furnished to keep
out dirt and grit ,
3.22 Air inlet. connection. The air inlet connection thread shall be
1/2 inch internal American National pipe thread.
3.13 Air strainer. The air strainer or screen with a mesh of 24 per inch
shall be replaceable and shall not be damaged when the supply hose is con-
nected or disconnected from the air inlet connection.
3.14 Coupling half. Unless otherwise specified, a coupling half conform-
ing to WW-C-633, Type III, Size 1/2 inch male, shall be furnished.
3.15 Oil reservoir l An oil reservoir shall be furnished. The oil reser-
voir shall be built into the back head or cylinder. The oil reservoir shall
have a capacity for not less than 30 minutes of continuous operation while
operating at 90 psig at the tamper.
