tests, appropriate electrical checks may be made to assure adequate vehicular electrical power is
being supplied and that the systems meet all the requirements at the voltage extremes specified.
Magnetic brake must be de-energized before power traversing turret.
4.5.1.40.1 Main armament balance check. To determine conformance to 3.6.12.2, a gage
shall be attached to the hand crank after turret and gun have been set to the conditions specified.
The torque required to move the gun in either direction shall be measured and the gun shall
balance as specified.
4.5.1.40.2 Nylon ballistic shield. To determine conformance to 3.6.12.3, the following
tests shall be performed concurrently with synchronization tests of 4.5.1.41.1:
a. Coaxial machine gun deflection. With the main gun at boresight position
point, a simulated machine gun containing a centering aperture shall be
installed in the machine gun mount. The mount shall be adjusted to boresight
position while viewing the coaxial machine gun target through the centering
hole in the simulated machine gun. A deflection measuring device shall be
mounted to the gun shield and coaxial machine gun deflection shall be
checked at main gun elevation of 20 and minus-10.
b. Gunner telescope sighting system deflection. With the gunner telescope set
initially in its boresight position, deflection shall be tested by observing the
telescope line of sight at 15 and minus 5 main gun elevation.
4.5.1.40.3 Manual traverse effort test. To determine conformance to 3.6.13.1 with the
boom in erect position, the hand crank shall be rotated and torque to maintain turret movement
shall be measured with inspection equipment. The mean torque shall be measured in each
direction of rotation at four points throughout 360 of traverse.
4.5.l.40.4 Manual elevation effort test. To determine conformance to 3.6.13.2, the hand
crank shall be rotated and torque to maintain movement of the gun in elevation and depression
shall be measured with inspection equipment, with the gun at horizontal position plus or minus
-1 at 15 or minus -1 elevation, and at minus -5 plus or minus 1 depression.
4.5.1.40.5 Manual elevation and depression response rate test. To determine
conformance to 3.6.13.3, the hand elevation crank shall be rotated at the specified rate in
elevation and depression. The gun angular movement per revolution shall be measured by
means of the M13A3 quadrant.
4.5.1.40.6 System backlash. To determine conformance to 3.6.13.4, the backlash test
shall be conducted using gunner telescope to measure the amount of backlash. A perpendicular
force of 170 pounds shall be applied at the muzzle end of gun and exerted first in the traverse
plane of rotation and then in the elevation plane. Backlash is the angular movement of the gun in
traverse and elevation when the applied force is reversed. Before conducting this test, assure that
the backlash has been adjusted per the installation drawing.
