The uppermost surface of the smoke cartridge assembly, when in a
horizontal position, shall be submerged 4 to 6 inches below the
water surface and subjected to a vacuum of 6.0 1.0 inches of
mercury for a minimum period of 60 seconds.  Leaks are indicated by
air bubbles issuing from the smoke cartridge assembly.  Do not
mistake the escape of occluded air for leakage.  Defective are
smoke cartridge assemblies failing to meet the requirements of 3.12.
4.5.12 Ballistic test.  The requirement for the warhead is to
provide a visible signature at impact with a functional reliability
of greater than 93% when fired with MK66 or MK50 motors at ranges
from 1000 meters to 6000 meters.  Performance shall be evaluated by
ground launching a sample of 36 XM274 warheads (18 assembled with
MK66 Mod 1 motors and 18 assembles with MK40 Mod 3 motors) 12
rockets, (6 of each type) shall be conditioned at -50F 5F,
12 rockets (6 of each type) at 70F 15F, and 12 rockets (6 of
each type) at 160F 5F for minimum of eight hours.  Two of
each type at each temperature shall be fired from an M260 or M261
launcher to impact at 1000 meters, two of each type at each
temperature shall be fired to impact at 3000 meters, two of each
type at each temperature shall be fired to impact at 6000 meters.
If three or more warheads fail to function, the lot shall be
rejected.
4.5.13 Data requirements.  The contractor shall submit a
quality inspection test demonstration and evaluation report in
accordance with Data Item Descriptions DI-R-1721 and DI-R-1724
giving the detailed test results.
5.
PACKAGING.
5.1  Packaging and marking.  When shipping as complete rounds,
MIS-30862 or MIS-50263 as applicable applied.  When shipping as
warheads only, drawings 8886810 and 8886811 and CFR49, Parts 100.199
apply.
5.2  Ammunition data cards.
Data card information shall be as
specified in MIL-STD-1167.

6.1  Intended use.  The warheads covered by this specification
are intended for use as part of the 2.75 Inch Hydra 70 Rocket System.

6.3  Submission of inspection equipment for design app rovals.
