to hold the electrical harness plug and to double the harness back on the
trailer tongue. Two dummy couplings shall be furnished and fastened to the
tongue for doubling back and holding the lines. The intervehiculer line
routing, connected and stowed, shall be such that dropping of the tailgate
of the military truck (see 3.7.1) will not damage any lines. A semitrailer-
type, electrical nosebox shall be furnished (see 3.9.1.1).
3.9.2 Chassis frame. The framing members of the vehicle shall support the
weights and maintain alinement under all conditions of transport and plant
operation as specified herein, and shall provide a rigid base for the operation
of machinery. All parts of the chassis frame where welding is required shall
be electrically welded.
3.9.3 Semitrailer upper fifth-wheel plate and kingpin. The upper fifth-
wheel plate shall cover a 36 -inch-diameter lower fifth wheel and shall extend
the entire width of the gooseneck. The plate shall be fabricated of high
tensile steel with not less than 50,000 psi yield point, and shall have a
thickness of not less than 0.370 inch. Both longitudinal and transverse
reinforcing members shall be provided. At the front of the plate, a front
coupling ramp shall be furnished. Ramps that are not flush with the front
crossmember shall include at least four vertical gussets and shall be pro-
vided with holes for water drainage. An SAE 2-inch-throat-diameter kingpin
conforming to MS53036 shall be installed not less than 24 inches or more than
36 inches from the front of the semitrailer. The center of the kingpin shall
be within 1/8 inch from the longitudinal centerline of the semitrailer.

3.9.4 Cart-trailer towing attachment. Each cart-type trailer shall be
equipped with stowing attachment having a lunette conforming to MS51337
installed in accordance with SAE J849. The lunette shall be supported the
entire length of the shank in a housing integral with the towing attachment.
The clearance between the shank and the housing shall not exceed 0.035 inch.
Upper and lower stops shall hold the square flange of the lunette to prevent
rotation. The lunette shall be installed on the towing attachment within
1/8 inch on either side of the centerline of the trailer. The towing attach-
ment may be either fixed or removable type, constructed and installed to pro-
vide a structure necessary to resist pulling, bending, and twisting without
permanent deformation a damage under all transport conditions specified
herein. The towing attachment shall be equipped with tire rub plates on
both sides. These plates shall be curved top and bottom to prevent possible
interference with the towing Vehicle's tire lugs. Two safety chains con-
forming to ICC regulations shall be furnished. The safety chain hooks Shall
pass through the shackles of the military truck specified in 3.7.1.
