3.7 Servicing and adjusting. Prior to acceptance by the Government inspector, the
contractor shall service and adjust each semitrailer chassis for operational use including at least
the following: adjustment of brake system; inflation of all tires; and complete lubrication with
grades of lubricants recommended for the ambient air temperature at the delivery point. The
semitrailer chassis shall be conspicuously tagged to identify the lubricants and their temperature
range.
3.8 Workmanship. Defective components or parts and assemblies which have been
repaired or modified to overcome deficiencies shall not be furnished. Welded, bolted, and
riveted construction utilized shall be in accordance with the highest standards of the industry.
3.8.1 Metal fabrication. Metal used in the fabrication of equipment shall be free from kinks
and sharp bends. The straightening of material shall be done by methods that will not cause
injury to the metal. Shearing and clipping shall be done neatly and accurately. Corners shall be
square and true. Flame cutting, using a tip suitable for the thickness of metal, may be employed
instead of shearing and sawing. Re-entrant cuts shall be made in the best possible manner. All
bends of a major character shall be made with controlled means in order to insure uniformity of
size and shape. Precautions shall be taken to avoid overheating, and heated metal shall be
allowed to cool slowly.
3.8.2 Fiberglass. Fiberglass or fiberglass coated plywood used in the fabrication of
equipment shall be smooth and free from bubbles, glazing cracks, and discontinuities. All edges
of fiberglass reinforced plywood shall be completely sealed to prevent water intrusion between
the laminates.
3.8.3 Bolted and riveted connections. Bolt and rivet holes shall be accurately punched or
drilled and shall have the burrs removed. Washers, lockwashers, or lock nuts shall be provided;
and all bolts, nuts, and screws shall be tight. Rivet heads, when not countersunk or flattened,
shall be of uniform size and shape for the same diameter of rivet, concentric with the rivet holes,
and in full contact with the surface of the members.
3.8.4 Welding. Welding procedures shall be in accordance with a nationally recognized
welding code. The surface of parts to be welded shall be free from rust, scale, paint, grease, or
