MIL-D-537F
3.3.1 Material deterioration prevention and control. The disks shall be fabricated from
compatible materials, inherently corrosion resistant or treated to provide protection against the
various forms of corrosion and deterioration that may be encountered in any of the applicable
operation and storage environment to which the disks may be exposed.
3.3.2 Identification of material and finishes. The contractor shall identify the specific
material, material finish or treatment for use with components and subcomponents, and shall make
information available, upon request, to the contracting officer or designated representative.
3.3.3 Recovered materials. For the purpose of this requirement, recovered materials are
those materials which have been collected from solid waste and reprocessed to become a source
of raw materials, as distinguished from virgin raw materials. The components, pieces and parts
incorporated in the disks may be newly fabricated from recovered materials to the maximum
extent practicable, provided the disks produced meets all other requirements of this specification.
Used, rebuilt or remanufactured components, pieces and parts shall not be incorporated in the
disks.
3.3.4 Circular inserts. Inserts identifying the value of glass standards shall be plastic material,
black printing on white or tan background.
3.4 Construction.
3.4.1 Circular inserts. The identifying circular inserts shall conform to figure 1, item B.
Inserts identifying the value of the glass color standards shall be permanently fastened at a
location 140 degrees counterclockwise from the glass color standards.
3.4.2 Glass color standards and filters. The glass color standards shall conform to figure 1,
item A. The glass filters, when required, shall conform to figure 1, item C, and shall be located in
the center of the disk. Glass color standards and filters shall be free of cracks, scratches, bubbles,
blisters, inclusions, nonuniformity of color, and other defects that will adversely affect their use.
When tested as specified in 4.5.2.5, glass color standards shall withstand without damage the
thermal shock incurred when removed from solid carbon dioxide (dry ice) and immediately
immersed in boiling water.
3.5 Performance.
3.5.1 Characteristics and accuracy.
3.5.1.1 Type I (pH) disk. The characteristics and accuracy of type I disks shall conform to
table I, and, unless otherwise specified (see 6.2), shall be standardized for use with the indicator
solutions specified, using viewing tubes having a 26 millimeters (mm) viewing depth. The
coloring of the glass color standards shall be such that the same reading shall be obtained when
used with diffused daylight, incandescent light, or white fluorescent light.
