TABLE 83. Hypsography area feature table (HYAREA.AFT) -
Continued.
Zones coincide approximately with elevation-vegetation zones noted
in many parts of the world. The 11,000-foot zone marks the
snowline and conifer limits in many parts of South America.
Zones coincide with recognized land use and crop patterns in South
America such as the tierra fria (cold land), tierra templada
(temperate land), and the tierra caliente (hot land). Plantation
crops such as cotton and banana are usually found in the tierra
caliente while coffee is found in the tierra templada.
Zones coincide with vehicle efficiency or performance breaks at
5000 and 9000 feet.
The highest zone (6) coincides with the altitude at which many
people are affected by high altitude sickness.
