3.2 Preproduction model.  The supplier shall furnish a mixing plant for
examination and test within the time frame specified to prove, prior to
starting production; that his production methods and choice of design detail
will produce mixing plants that comply with the requirements of this speci-
fication (see 6.3).  Examination and tests shall be those specified herein.
3.3 Initial production.  When specified, the supplier shall furnish to
the Government one or more mixing plants for inspection as speciflid  in 4.4.
3.4 Material.  Materials shall be as specified herein and as shown on
the applicable drawings.  Materials not specified shall be selected by the
supplier and shall be subject to all provisions of this specification. All
materials shall be new and unused.
3.5 Safety. The safety characteristics of the plant shall provide
necessary safety and protective devices or prominent warnings without im-
pairing the operating functions of the plant. For exposed components and
systems which are subject to high temperatures, high pressures, electrical
actuation, or which are inherently hazardous, the plant's safety character-
istics shall provide correct safeguarding enclosing, and insulating features.
All step and platform surfaces shall provide a nonskid footing. Nonfunctional
sharp edges, projecting points, and excessive length of fasteners shall be
eliminated where injury could be caused to operating or maintenance personnel.
Humeri factors engineering characteristics shall be incorporated into the plant.
The operating characteristics of the plant shall provide for operation by
personnel ranging from the small man clothed through the large man arctic
clothed, in accordance with SAE J833.
3.6 Maintainability.  The plant shall opera" as specified herein without
maintenance other than the supplier's recommended schedule of lubrications
and adjustments as established by a lubrication chart, and a maintenance
schedule submitted by the supplier prior to the test.  All major assemblies
and installed attachments shall be accessible for maintenance, repair, and
replacement without the remowal of other major assemblies and installed
