attachments.  Covers or plates, such as those on shrouds or housings, which
must be removed for adjustment or maintenance shall be equipped with quick-
disconnect fastenings.  Disconnect plugs and receptacles, multiple-line
connectors in the electrical system, and detachable- and attachable-type
fittings in hydraulic and pneumatic system, as applicable, shall be utilized
where practicable to permit component removal and replacement. All discon-
nect points shall be clearly indicated.  Maximum practicable use shall be
made of interchangeable hardware and fastening devices with a minimum number
of types and sizes of bolts, screws, nuts, washers, and similar common
Lockwashers shall be secured to bolts or screws except
(standard) parts.
where this practice is not practicable.  Drain outlets shall be located for
accessibility and shall permit the use of receptacles for collecting drainage.
Drain plugs shall be removable by wrench. All parts having the same
manufacturer's part number shall be functionally and dimensionally inter-
changeable.
`3.7 Transportability.
3.7.1 Performance characteristics.  Each vehicle shall meet the transport
performance characteristics specified herein when: (1) prepared for trans-
port; (2) completely serviced and adjusted as specified in 3.8; and (3) when
towed by a 5-ton, 6 by 6, M52 truck-tractor for semitrailers or any 5-ton,
6 by 6, M39 series truck for cart-type trailers.
3.7.1.1 Highway operation. Each vehicle shall operate over smooth, hard-
surfaced primary highways at speeds up to 20 mph.
3.7. Unimproved road  operation. Each vehicle shall operate over unim-
proved roads at speeds up to 10 mph.
3.7.1.3 Trailing and turning ability. Each vehicle shall trail the towing
vehicle without weaving.  Each vehicle shall fallow the towing vehicle with-
out exceeding 75 percent of the ICC towed-vehicle tolerance.  Jackknife turns
up to an angle of 90) degrees for semitrailers and turns up, to 60 degrees for
cart-trailers and dolly semitrailer combinations, as measured from straight-
ahead to the right and to the left, shall not cause damage to or intesference
between the towed vehicle dolly and the towing vehicle.
3.7.1.4 Braking ability. On each vehicle the combined service brakes of
the towing and towed vehicle shall control, decelerate, and stop the combi-
nation in accordance with ICC requirements, except that the stopping distance
.
shall be accurately measured from initial movement of the brake pedal to
stopping point. When actuated, the emergency breakaway system shall produce
smooth emergency brake application.  On multiple-axle units, wheel hop during
braking shall be prevented.
