4 . 4 . 3 . 5 . 2  I n t e r p l a n t .  W h e n rifles are manufactured
concurrently
b y more than one contractor, each contractor shall forward
monthly six
rifles for the interplant interchangeability test specified
in 4.5.8.2
( s e e 6.1).  T h e contractor will be informed of any failure
of the rifles
t o meet prescribed requirements.

4.4.3.6 Endurance testing.

4 . 4 . 3 . 6 . 1 L o t s i z e .  T h e first five inspection lots for endurance
t e s t i n g shall each consist of 500 rifles or a month's production which-
e v e r is smaller.  When five successive lots meet the endurance require-
m e n t s the lot size shall be increased to 2,500 rifles or a month's
p r o d u c t i o n , whichever is smaller.  W h e n five successive lots of the
i n c r e a s e d size have met the endurance requirements, the lot size shall
b e further increased to 5,000 rifles or a month's production, whichever
i s s m a l l e r .  I f rejection of a lot occurs at any time, the next smaller
t e s t lot size criteria shall be reinstated and the above procedure re-
p e a t e d in returning to the larger lot size.

4 . 4 . 3 . 6 . 2  P r o c e d u r e .  One rifle and 12 magazines selected by the
G o v e r n m e n t representative from each inspection lot shall be tested by
t h e contractor for endurance using the test method specified in 4.5.9.
T h e contractor shall provide replacement parts as required to complete
t h i s  t e s t .  T h e initial test rifle from each lot shall be fired 6,000
r o u n d s and if the rifle fails to meet the endurance requirements but
has not more than 21 malfunctions and 3 unserviceable parts (in accord-
ance with Table I), a second rifle may be taken by the Government rep-
r e s e n t a t i v e from the same lot without reconditioning the rifles in the
l o t and subjected to the endurance test.  T h e second rifle shall meet
a l l endurance requirements, and the combined totals for both rifles
(each fired 6,000 rounds) shall not exceed 21 malfunctions and 3 un-
s e r v i c e a b l e p a r t s .  If the above requirements are not met, the represented
l o t shall be rejected subject to reconditioning and further test as a
r e c o n d i t i o n e d  l o t .  P r i o r to submission of a lot of rifles as a re-
c o n d i t i o n e d lot, the cause of failure shall be determined and contractor
c o r r e c t i o n s h a l l b e e f f e c t e d o n a l l r i f l e s i n t h e l o t .  A sample of
2 rifles and 24 magazines from each reconditioned lot shall be tested
u s i n g the test methods specified in 4.5.9 Failure of either rifle to
m e e t the requirements shall cause rejection of the represented lot
s u b j e c t to further reconditioning and testing.

4 . 4 . 3 . 7  C e r t i f i c a t i o n .  F o r e a c h i n s p e c t i o n l o t o f r i f l e sj t h e  c o n -
t r a c t o r shall provide the Government representative with a certified re-
p o r t of touch-up paint compliance with the applicable drawings and touch-
up procedures of MIL-W-13855.
